I have a home day care and the basement is set up for kids...
i have painted once a year for the last 7 years now...i have tried many colors but the best is blue...light shades of blue and even peachy colors are the best....watch designs if you are going to hang posters...one panel of dry erase board paneling is great for a drawing wall...if going to use chalk paint..just a section for chalk paint is all that is needed for that..a tree painted in the corner growing out on each corner is cool too...we hang things from the branches and even put snow on it in winter....we have a family tree up right now...soon to be apples for apple harvesting...the ceiling....a sky...light blue with soft puffy clouds....its fun to hang pictures on ceiling too....i also use rope to hang across room and use clothespins to hang their artwork....best art gallery around...i also like paintung each wall a different color...either the primary colors or lighter shades of color using...i mix with white paint for shades.....

Playrooms are areas of activity and learning, so a more vibrant color, such as a purple, green, or red would be a great color choice if you are looking to keep the look simple.
Disney has a great line of paint colors for kids out...Disney paints are made by Behr, which is the Home Depot brand. The colors have some great names, like "Pixie Dust" and "Heffalump Purple". Just do a Yahoo! search for Disney paint and you can browse all the Disney paint colors online.
If you want to get creative, consider a unique faux finish or a mural of some sort. Clouds are always a very simple and fun way to give a space some interest...consider adding some small bird murals (wallpaper murals) to the backdrop to give a more convincing or even a "cartoonish" effect.
One other very fun look is the denim faux finish. I did this technique at my mother-in-law's house for my daughter and nephew's playroom. It looks awesome and can be combined with a playful border (such as a Pooh border) for a great look.
Hope this all helps. You can find instructions for the faux clouds and the denim faux finish at the site below.

Interest'g. If U only use 2 colors, eventually Ur son will get tired of it look'g "girly" & want U to paint it a different color. Which I would guess would be in the next 2 to 3 yrs. & who knows how much paint will cost then?? I would have to say, make a list of the different things they like ie~ Backyardigans or a blanket they both like, etc. Show them the colors on it & ask them which ones they like. I would try Red, Purple, Pink, & Blue and Maybe 1 other color & mix them on the walls. Like Red background w/ a Purple or Blue Painted Squares or Shapes or all the colors as shapes w/ 1 background color. I would take a piece of Printer Paper & draw 1 wall & then pencil in some shapes for ie picture frames or ? & then take a crayon or marker & color around the pencil sketches. & do this w/ all 4 walls. This way U get an idea of how it would look. & until U & the kids pick 1 U like, it'll save U the time of painting the walls & the kids hating it altogether. Luckily I have 2 lil boys under 3 but that day is coming when some1 will want to color the walls. I plan to cheat & get old dry erase boards from ~ie schools, thrift stores, etc. & put them on the walls so that I never have to worry about 1 if not both of them finding my craft paints, markers, & stuff.

You decide!
Blue - The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. Peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because it symbolizes loyalty. People are more productive in blue rooms.
Green - Currently the most popular decorating color, green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color. People waiting to appear on TV sit in "green rooms" to relax. Hospitals often use green because it relaxes patients. Brides in the Middle Ages wore green to symbolize fertility. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth.
Yellow - Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.
White - Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a summer color. White is popular in decorating and in fashion because it is light, neutral, and goes with everything. However, white shows dirt and is therefore more difficult to keep clean than other colors.
Red - The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. In decorating, red is usually used as an accent. Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect since it will attract attention.
The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy.

It is great for learning their colors and mind motivation. Paint each wall a different color, red, orange, yellow, green, and the ceiling blue. Then use the corresponding colors to do the stripes and circles, Good Luck.

Children are the brightest and most p[leasant part of our day. Make the room as bright and cheerful as they are. A canary yellow is a good base color. I'd use white as an accent for stripes but if you choose circles I'd use all primary colors, blue, red and green.

It depends red is a good party color but whitish tan is a better family regular color. A light blue spongey color would also look good with the same color on the ceiling.
