the answer to your question is yes. but they go to schooling and then get put back in the army as an NCO Non-comissioned Officer. this is not done much but it can be. it can also go the other way. An NCO can go to OCS Officer Candidate School and become an officer. this is seen very often. want anymore info just email me

A friend of mine who was a Navy LCDR was RIF'd, joined the National Guard as a Spec5, but retired as LCDR when he finished his 20 years. He got his 20 sometime around 1979.
