This is one of those politically correct things. Basically, subjectively, in your heart, you are not acting in a racist way, as you say, they are terms you use with affection.

But objectively, by abbreviating and simplifying a name that represents a culture, once far more advanced than ours, and giving them a baby name - like a mother gives a child a nick-name, is assuming the power to be able to change the representation of a culture and a nation, and derogatory in terms of the 'quality' of that name. This is important when you understand the abuse that the Asian community have to put up with mostly on a daily basis from fellow British, and possibly it becomes to them yet another thing that 'puts them down'.

In real terms, from your point of view, it may seem no different from calling a chip shop the 'chippy', but to the Asian community it is only helping to segregate their nation and culture.

Contrary to I suppose in this P.C. era I don,t think you are a racist a few years ago my ex partner and I ran a small offy+ sweet shop before we took over the shop it was run by an old white couple and had been for the last 20 years they just decided to sell up and move to warmer climes my partner and I were also both white [and still are!] Any way I used to go clubbing at a club quite close to the shop and obviously would meet some of my customers in the club they sometimes had friends with them I had never met before and I was allways being introduced as the bloke who runs the paki shop up the road I never took offence at this in fact I used to make light of the comment and funnily enough I have a few friends who are of Asian lineage and when they visit me now in my new house where oppisite we have an Asian run offy and funnily enough my Asian friends say just nipping over the Pakki,s for a few cans of beer a lot of people will say its just peer pressure but I do not agree with that theory I have a first hand experiance of Racism whilst out with my Asian pals they had few of their family members down for a visit and my mates family got really anti us when my Asian friend was at the bar having a laugh with me and a few more of the non Asian lads that we both went to school with strangely enough we never saw Jazi as being Asian.! He was just a local lad going to a school that all of us had to attend I have realised that a lot of this racist stuff is caused by white people jumping on the P.C bandwagon and that causes a lot of problems in itself! fair enough there is a racist element about. But it go,s both ways and even within the Asian community there is a lot of racism depending on faith ,social standing , birthplace etc etc

You have to understand that you can't generalise everyone from Asia as a "paki", because it isn't true. Besides, the word paki is an insult only when said in an insulting manner, or with malice in mind. This is the case with most "racist" words, as any ethnic minority or anyone who's friends with someone from an ethnic minority will tell you! As for all of you actual racists...three words...GET AN EDUCATION!

Fantastic question !.....I've wondered this myself.....to say it's getting ridiculously out of control is an understatement, but I'm not in the least racist, I may hate individuals if they're creeps, no matter what race, but people are generally just people, what sends my blood pressure up though is when it's just minorities that are cosseted, ever heard the phrase honky when African Americans speak of white people? You can bet your bottom dollar that if a Chinese called me a name or an Asian, and I'm white, there'd be no stink or outcry., how about paleface?Shall I sue the Indian nation? There are loads of derogatory names used against whites, why doesn't that count ?

You have hit the spot by saying "a term of endearment". Nevertheless, persons of other ethnicities place different cultural values upon labelling, and to label a Hindu from India as a "Paki" could be construed as insulting by the recipient of the remark. Admittedly, a substantial portion of the supposed insults towards our Asian brethren are socially constructed (i.e. they are construed as insults by media, the Law etc as insulting where no insult is meant), but it must be realised that the Asian societies that have developed in the UK operate under different cultural rules and customs to the white Briton, and, in particular, our own culture of "taking the piss" (to wit, making fun of others that differ from our own individual perception of life, culture and values) is anathema to some Asians. We call people "fatso" or "pisshead" within our own culture without fear of repercussions, but we are, by and large, a race of people without Culture, and we do not realise how much insult we give to other Britons from Asian or Afro-Carribean ethinicity by applying our own laxity and indifference to the traditions and beliefs of persons from these communities. "Face", and the loss of it, is viewed askance by a lot of the world, and we have a lot of the world living, and contributing, to the vibrant nation that Britain has become.

I would not label you as "racist", for to be so would indicate you have intolerance for those of different race from yourself. Nevertheless, you will need to accept that the UK's best future is as a multicultural society, and that progress can only be achieved by a mutual respect for each other's customs, in order that we can all develop in this wonderful land, together.

What makes you a racist is the lack of respect you show to people rather than the words you use to describe them. Paki and chink are terms of abuse and using them shows a lack of respect for those the words are directed to.

Language use can be confusing. If you want to describe a person whose ancestors were African, you can use the word black. You can say "a black person", but leave out the word person and you're being impolite. And if you use the Spanish word for black you'll get an abuse warning.

Since there is no capitalizatin of the appropriate letters in the questions & no shame, it seems that being racist isn't very serious, either.
With complete exasperation, it would seem that it's normal. Being isolated, insolated, fed a ration of 'she it' routinely, it is certainly acceptable to consider that without hatred or violence, the issue is of little consequence & doesn't matter.

be careful on your wording, as i'm being now. you at the instant are not being racist, yet particularly classist. You have been raised to a different commonly used than those loud, rambunctious human beings. in case you have been to describe that team to somebody without putting forward race, some might assume that they have got been black. I actual have seen that all and sundry ethnicities have cultured individuals and 'wild' individuals. It does make me sense badly to make the distinction, yet you would be surprising. i hit upon myself uncomfortable associating with somebody exterior of my classification. i'm getting disturbing and irritated around wealthy human beings, and that i'm getting embarrassed and frightened around those that are in simple terms sitting around, yelling around the campus, 'making a scene'. i'd desire to make certain all human beings notices that whilst it is not real each and all the time, often that latter team happens to be black. it is not a foul element, so i do no longer think of I would desire to sense undesirable asserting that i do no longer elect to affiliate with it. yet I do.
