It's a form of sleep paralysis. It happens most often when you sleep on your back.
Demons are fairy tale nonsense for cave-dwelling kiddies.

A lot of people will automatically discount the notion of demons. And in a lot of cases they are right. What you experienced could be any one of a number of things; anxiety, an overactive imagination, something you ate, some kind of organic disorder. But I do believe that demons are real, just as I believe that angels are. And just as I think angels have some impact in the world, I believe demons do as well.
I would caution you, however. The cross and holy water mean nothing. There is nothing magical about them that will protect you. However, a firm faith in God is all the armor you need. Demons will still go after you, but you have to rely on the strength of God not your own.

this is sleep paralysis
it is a chemical release at the point of sleep that incapacitates you during dream state so that you do not act out your dreams
it can often be accompanied with hallucination type imagery or sound
and the most common report is the heaviness on the chest , like someone is sitting on you and restricting your breathing
although scary .. its very harmless
but do see your GP/doctor if it is continuing or getting worse

There's actually a name for this "the visiting of the hag" i get that sometimes too it's really scary but scientifically i think it's to do with waking up from a deep sleep too quickly or something so your body is all confused and you hallucinate or something.

Psychosomatic, if anything. Go read "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan, he devotes near a whole chapter to the subject of that sort of sleeping paralysis...

Could be. If it happens again, instead of praying in your head, trying praying out loud. Rebuke it, whatever it is, and see if it doesn't disappear.

Asprin.
It's called "dead-man syndrome", I get it every time I take asprin. I wake up in the morning and can't move.
Naturally, I don't take asprin anymore.

That's scary. I heard of evil forces holding people down. I would repeat over and over if this happens again "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus".
