The owner fails to understand why I do some of the things I do, in fact he thinks I am cruel. For example, I do not put my plate on the floor for him to lick up the scraps. I do however, give him scraps in his bowl if he will sit and wait for me to empty the dish in his bowl. Then he is premitted to enjoy his scraps. Further, I do not get balls of toliet paper and play with them with the dog, Can anyone tell me why I do not do these things. Am I being cruel or practical? The dog use to have a habit of stealing food and biting people for it and taking trash from the bathroom can and spreading it all over the floor, GEE, I can't imagine why I am changing so many things. THE ONLY thing I can't seem to change is his rotten owner. (Whom, by the way, the dog humps him. What does that tell you?) I will forward all of your responses for him to read. P.S. The rest of the family is doing a great job with the training.

Hi-
First, table scraps are not good for any dog but I am sure almost every dog gets some at some point on the floor on a plate or in a bowl or other.. This can lead to weight issues and cause varying stools and health problems later on. A treat once and a while like a dog biscuit that cleans teeth is recommended, but it isnot a crime to give your dog table scraps and just think, the plate gets extra clean befroe you put in dishwasher!!
Sounds like the dog may have gotten two "rotten owners" as you say (not to be direspectful) but to cut down another person for doing things they did with the dog out of love prior to you training it isnt any differerent than you giving the dog table scraps in his bowl out of love. The answer to your question is yes I think you are being cruel. All dogs will have bad habits and they just need to be broken of them and trained the correct way. Even our dog gets into the bathroom trash can once and a blue moon and that doesnt mean we are bad owners. Even our dog gets to lick the plate when we are not looking that doesnt mean we are bad owners. Dogs are dogs. The ONLY thing you need to change is the attitude and work together to correct this dog of yours. Also buy dog toys.
Please forward this on to him so maybe he will take part in working together to correct the dog and not listen to you being cruel. Sorry that is how I see it. That is what I see practical. Also--
Dogs will hump that is what they do, that doesnt say anything about the owner and niether does the trash or plate eating. Sounds to me like he loves the dog just as much as you do, give him some slack. your way is not totally the right way and include him in the corrections. That is great about the rest of the family doing a great job. Yes-- get on the same page in training the dog but dont cut down someone else in the process. Work with them, that is practical. Good Luck!

OK, sounds like a case of humanizing the dog. Which can be BAD for the dog! First, scraps....good for you not putting it on the floor...BAD for putting it in the dish! In the wild would a dog want venison or your macaroni?? People food is bad for dogs, and causes blocked arteries, obesity, and deficiencies. Bassets are already tending to get chubby easily. No more scraps. If he needs treats, by all means get Beggin Strips (like Bacon) which SEEMS like people food to make the owner happy. Balls of toilet paper will go into the digestive tract, and if they can't be passed through, the dog will get a condition called bloat and DIE or need extensive surgery. As for humping the dog id obviously asserting dominance, which we both know can lead to biting again, and he sees the owner on a level lower than his own.

Are you the owner? or a trainer??
Well what you are doing it right!!! you shoud never let the dog eat from your palte, scraps in the bowl is just the same for the dog.

Toilet paper is not a good play thing for a dog they can rip it up and swallow it.. that is not good for their health!!!

What is being done by the person asking the question is spot on!!
so the stupid owner should keep their nose out, cos from what has been said the dog is improving and in no way is the person training the dog cruel!! they know best!!

If you encourage a dog to play with toilet paper....it will eventually go into the bathroom and see it as a toy. Also if the dog eats it...it can cause blockage. I just spend a few dollars and got some toys.

My dogs sit before any meal. Sometimes they must wait 30 mins b4 they can go and eat it. Because I said so and i'm dominant over the dogs.....all four of them

BTW table scraps are bad.....so unless you feed raw then dont do it.

Also if he feeds a begging dog its kind of stupid too. If a baby begs you for a pint of ice cream and a 6 pack of beer....would you give it to them even if you know it would harm them?

This is simple training. Imagine if he saw me. I am a total dominance trainer. Sure theyre my friends but I am also their master. They sit before they go outside for walks. I am the first one out and in the door. They do not come inside the house unless I tell them to.

This is not cruel. Its training

If i was a dog in a pack running loose....I would kill one for not following directions because thats how they work.

EDIT:
tell him to watch the dog wisper

I am having a horrible time keeping my dog on the training that I have started, because I moved back into my parents house where they love to spoil my dog. Before I moved back I got a bassett-beagle mix and I love him soo much. I want him to be a disciplined dog though. I do not give him any food meant for human consumption except for eggs (protein for his coat), and I also put those only in his dish. He is not allowed to eat them from a plate. I take anything from him that is not meant strictly to be his toy, because I don't want him grabbing things from strangers. He was doing so well before I move back home and now he is derailing from his training a bit because my mom loves to give him food and doesn't take things away from him. It is so frustrating because one person can really wreak havoc on a training program, a lot more than I thought. His owner is not rotten, he or she just doesn't understand how much this hurts the training and that the dog will be so much easier to get along with if he or she keeps to the program that was originally set forth.

I love my dog so much and am looking forward to moving out so we can concentrate on good training and spend more time having fun because of that.

Sounds to me like the owner is the one who needs training. It is a team effort to redirect a dog's bad behavior. The dog should not be given toilet paper to play with as that is not a proper toy. Also, scraps should be greatly limited as every vet will tell you. Dog's should be fed a good quality commercial food as that contains all the needed nutrients for a healthy diet as they do not need human food. Just as an occasional treat should they be given human food.
