I have been breastfeeding my son almost exclusively for the last 7 months (he is only just beginning to show interest in solids this past week)... and I just started menstruating again. I was a little surprised as my son isn't really on solids yet (only about a tablespoon full of rice cereal a day) and I haven't decreased the number of times that I nurse him really. He feeds on demand and co-sleeps so he still does nurse once or twice at night.

I realize that women generally have their periods resume anywhere between 6-24 months (on average ~ sometimes earlier and sometimes later) but I am curious to know how long it took other women to begin menstruating when still breastfeeding (and not those who were supplementing with formula)? Thank you.

Hi. I got my period when my son was 7 months. I was nursing exclusively, except for cereal in the AM. I skipped the next month and just got it again. (My son is 9 months now.) I was surprised also, as I didn't get my period back for 6 months after I finished nursing with my first son. My first son nursed like crazy, every 3 hours or so. This little guy was more on a schedule and nursed every 4-5 hours. So I guess that was the reason.

With my second child I started menstruating at about 4 months. I think with my first it was a little later and I nursed him for a year. I have a girlfriend who started hers when baby was 4 months old and she nursed till baby was over a year. So if you want to continue nursing, hang in there... Your body is doing what it needs to do...

Exclusively nursed all three of mine until starting solids at 6 mos. Continued nursing with addition of solids well beyond the first year with all three children.

baby #1 - period returned at 10 mos
baby #2 - tandem nursing #1 and #2 - period returned at 9.5 months (felt really gyped since I was nursing two!)
baby #3 - period returned at about 16 months

My son was 10 months. I know someone else who started at 6 weeks and she was exclusively breastfeeding. It is different for everyone.

Once a baby feeds less than 4 hourly your periods can return. I was lucky my twins were 10 months old

Started my period when she was 8 months. Nursed & pumped for 14 months. I think it was soon after starting that I was no longer able to pump enough for daycare and had to start supplimenting some with formula.

Hi there,

I believe everyone is different . I got my period when my baby was only 4.5 months old and I was breastfeeding him. So I think nothing to be worry about. Good luck
