Recently I have started working in clothing store. Since I get a good discount on clothing I started dressing more nicely. Yesterday during work, one of the coworkers asked me if I was GAY. This wasn't a joke, the women was completely serious. And this is not the first time this has happened, other times recently I have been asked about my sexual orientation. What gives?

next time ask the person the question back, and see how they like it

To answer your question; "Is it bad when someone thinks you're gay?" No! Because people are people, and I don't see how your sexual orientation is an issue on your job! But I seem to get that you have been asked the same question outside of your job. If that is the case and it bothers you, next time ask the nosy person why they think that about you. It's possible that you are not aware of the image you are presenting, and someone close to you might be able to help you rearrange some of your styling to look more conventional. But if you've got great style who cares what people think?

People are stupid. I hope you know that you don't have to respond to those sorts of questions if people ask you. Tell them they're being rude.

But there is a stereotype that people live along that homosexuals are fashionably dressed. I don't know who made it up, but people's first reaction to a well-dressed guy is that he is gay. Don't let it get to you.

Also, there is the term metrosexual to describe a guy who is focused on being fashionable. That is in no way to imply someone's sexual orientation, though. It's just a term.

But next time someone asks you if you're gay based on how you dress or something like that, tell that person it's none of their business and he/she is being extremely rude as well as misrepresenting the rest of society by asking such a meaningless and stupid question.

You are getting a lot of crappy answers here so I thought perhaps some perspective would help.

First of all, it does not matter if you are or are not gay. That someone asks you usually indicates some interest which should be flattering. (unless of course this is someone who is trying to belittle you in which case their vocal inflection should give you a clue.) Either way this will work.

Be very very flattered that they are interested in you enough to ask, and while you are very flattered at their interest, you believe your best interests are served by keeping your social life separate from you work life. (and you could always say something about your girl friend if you must identify your preference to this person.)
She might just like your sense of style and be looking for a girl friend.

People assume if guys have a nice appearance that they're gay; this stereotype has been perpetuated by the media recently. I would just spread the word you're not, then people will stop asking you. Because that could put a damper on dating.

Actually, you should take it as a compliement, since its a stereotype that gay men dress well, it means your dressing well. If you don't like being asked, try and figure out if there's anything else you do that is leading them on, and try and act less afemininte.

Well... Its just that its not very often that girls see guys who actually care alot about their appearance, So>>>> in turn if we see one... Our Gaydar goes off... But Its not always true. I have known men in the past who take WONDERFUL care of themselves, even get manicures and pedicures... they arent gay, or even BI... they are metro sexual! meaning that they are straight men who just have good grooming behaviors.

Just because you dress nicely, it doesn't mean your gay, did you give them any other reason to make them think you are gay???
