Do businesses really cut up maxed out cards? Or is that just a myth?

No, I know what you mean....like in the movies. You're talking about when the clerk, phone on shoulders talking to your bank, cuts the credit card with scissors right in front of your face. I've never seen that happen in real life. But if your card is maxed out, it doesn't mean the card can't be used again in the future. I thought all you have to do is pay your balance. Sorry for not answering your quesiton!

I have worked in retail all my life and I did actually have one credit card company tell me to cut up a credit card of a customers. I can't remember why they told me to. The customer was very angry and I would never do it again but it does happen. I think maybe if its stolen but if its maxed out it usually doesn't happen.

If its maxed, it doesn't matter if its cut up or not. You can't use it anymore anyway. If you can't stop using it, especially for things you don't need, cut it up yourself.
