First of all, please remember that Christianity is not monlithic. There are many flavors and shades of belief. However, all Christian who really are Christians wil hold to certain core doctrine that defines the religion.
1- That mankind fell from the grace of God and is separated from God by sin. This sin was disobedience. Man chose to walk away from God.
2- That sin leads to death. An eternal death that is the separation of Man from the love of God. This state of separation is often described metephorically as "Hell".
3- That Man is not capable of bridging this gap between God and Himself.
4- That God, knowing that Man was not able to bridge the gulf, did it Himself by sending Jesus.
5- That Jesus took upon himself the rightful punishment that mankind deserved.
6- That to prove Man's release from the curse of sin, Jesus was raised from the dead, showed Himself to hundreds of people, then ascended, returnign to the realm of perfect peace and love metephorically called "Heaven".
That is pretty much the bare bones. There is a lot of debate as to details; the mechanics of it, the proper interpretation fo the Bible, etc, but those are side issues. I think these are the core doctrines of the faith.

Eze 18:4 - "Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die."
Ro 3:23 - "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Romans 5:12 -- "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned."
We've all sinned and are worthy of death. So, salvation is from DEATH! and the wrath of God (Romans 5:9).

HELL
What is Hell? Is it a place of torment? Or just a person's grave?
* The Bible has several words that are translated as 'hell': The Greek word 'Hades' (equivalent to the Hebrew word 'Sheol') means the grave, pit, or poetically, the abode of the dead. This is not a place of torment, because "the dead know not any thing" (Ecclesiastes 9:5).
* Another word translated 'hell' is 'tartaroo'. This word is only used once in the Bible (2 Peter 2:4). Strong's lexicon says that it is the deepest abyss of hell. 2 Peter says it is a place where the sinning angels are imprisoned until judgement. That's not specifically a place of torment either (God doesn't punish before judgement). Apparently, not all the sinning angels are put there, because we still see evidence of demons and evil spirits — sinning angels — right up until Christ returns to the earth.
* Thirdly, there is 'Gehenna'. This is a real, down to earth place that people can go to and come back from without having to die first. It means, the 'valley of Hinnom'. It has become a refuse pit, a dump. It is just outside Jerusalem. It's not exactly a choice vacation spot; though a lot of people do go there just to say they've been to hell and back!
However, there is a place/time that is not called hell directly, but most certainly is a place of torment — it is the “lake of fire.” It is also called the second death (Revelation 20:14) — the death from which there is no resurrection. All those who refuse to repent of their sinning ways will be left there to be burned up — completely destroyed and become as though they never existed (Obadiah 1:16).
Jesus used the term 'Gehenna' as a type of this “lake of fire.” Gehenna was where the dead criminals were thrown and burned. The Lake of Fire, the anti-type of Gehenna, will be the place where spiritual criminals (unrepentant sinners) will be thrown. This is the place where there will be "weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 22:13) — torment. But the torment is not forever, as is popularly believed — for a loving God does not delight in the torment or even distruction of the wicked (Eze 33:11). But the wicked (who do not turn) will be completely destroyed in the Lake of Fire (Matthew 10:28), even to become ashes beneeth the feet of the saints (Malachi 4:3).
Jesus comes to offer us eternal life in paradise!
Joh 10:10 - "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly."
Joh 17:2 - "as You have given Him [Jesus] authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.
Now do you understand what salvation is about?

Hell is where you are right now....Confused, over thinking, people throwing answers at you left and right. no one of them making enough sense to solve the riddle that you have yourself thought up. Step out of hell and stop thinking about all this tripe. Stop worrying that they are right or wrong and start looking into your own thoughts on the matter. They are the only thoughts that count for anything.
"Saved" Is what they want you to be. A believer, a worshiper, a contributer, a follower etc... to whatever they tell you need to be followed, worshiped, believed, etc... Don't fall into the trap. You don't need to be saved by someone else with an alterior motive. Save yourself the trouble and move past it all and onto something new in your life.

When we are saved by Christ, we are no longer destined to eternal punishment for our sins. We are, essentially, saved from hell. Hell is a real place, with real fire. That is where all who do not accept Jesus as their Savior are destined to. However, because Jesus already suffered the punishment for our sins on the cross, whoever accepts that can be saved! When one is saved, they are destined for Heaven. If hell is a place of indescribable pain and torment, then how much more is Heaven a place of indescribable joy! I hope this helps, God bless you!

You are kind of asking a lot more than one question....
I thinked "Saved" is kind of unknowable from this perspective. I think you need an eternal perspective in order to be able to talk about being "Saved". I really don't understand myself how people can walk around being "Saved," especially if that attitude leads them to believe that they can pretty much do whatever and still go to heaven.
Hell = eternal isolation from God (and each other)
Heaven = eternal communion with God (and each other)
Both heaven and hell are spiritual at the present time, but after the final judgment, when we all get reunited with our bodies, heaven and hell will also be physical. It will be painful, ugly, and excruciating to be forever separted from all that is good, loving, and holy.

Saved from the consequences of sin. So, yeah bascially its being saved from Hell. Hopefully, one day we can all agree on one thing the world would be a much better place. Hell is the place or state of punishment of the wicked after death; the abode of evil and condemned spirits. It is not a place on Earth is a spiritual realm. Yes, it's created. It was made for Satan and his fallen angels. For God did not [even] spare angels that sinned, but cast them into hell, delivering them to be kept there in pits of gloom till the judgment and their doom (2 Peter 2:4). "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, From whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire"(Revelation 20:10-15). When you die your Earthy body is buried, it is only meant to be temporary, only your soul moves on to Heaven or Hell.

To the human mind it doesn't make sense! The thing is is that people are trying to make or believe in something that's on a piece of paper or something you can prove with science. when dealing with the natural you can think Logically! when dealing with the outside of being natural you can't prove it with science it will always come out different, wrong, and insufficient. The difference between people who believe and people who don't is that the people that do believe don't do it with their minds they do it with their hearts! Sometimes We want to believe in something because we don't know! I'm not sure what Hell really is like But i know it's somewhere I don't want to be! I've never been there! I know that i want to be with God! I will do whatever i need to do to get there! Hell is a place where people go that do bad things and don't repent after they have heard the way God wants them to go. For me I rather worship the Creator instead of the created!

i am an atheist, though (or because) i know a lot about religions
"saved" refers to a person becoming of their particular faith, weather right or wrong
hell is not that place of fire and brimstone that many "believers" depict it to be, according to its source- the bible- it is a place without god so that one cannot feel the warmth of their creator
it got its original idea of fire and brimstone from the dark ages in which hell was used to bring people away from the pagan religions and brought to Christianity. its modern day depiction comes from a poem called the inferno.
i hope that this answers your questions.

A couple of sources
Armstrong's "A history of God"
Pagel's works....
just for starters
then, maybe, Spinoza's works
just for a different view
but to answer your question....
"saved" can be the $$$ that you didn't spend
a baseball game in which your relief pitcher preserves the win
the process of storing info, using your computer
being saved by the bell....
save the last dance for me
save the theatrics for someone else
save the whales
save...etc etc etc

"Saved" means you believe in ignorant superstition. There is no "God". There in no "Heaven" or "Hell". There is only life and death.
The bible is pure bunk. You might as well worship Zeus or Hercules, that makes about as much sense.
Do you really believe the world is flat and that the sun orbits the earth, and that the universe is only 5,000 years old? Please!
If you really believe in this stuff, next time your car breaks down, try praying to see if that works [instead of taking it to the repair shop]. And don't give me this "God works in mysterious ways baloney", that just an excuse.
