My daughter went to school for the first time today and is not happy about it. Her father and I took her and her dad picked her up. She was so unhappy that she would not eat her snack of a brownie. She then threw a fit when he took her to the sitters. How can we make going to school happy for all of us?

She did not have a problem at school. Actually, she had fun. She asked this morning if she had school and when I told her no, it is tomorrow, she was happy to be going. Will see how it goes. I really wish I could take her back home, but have to work. She is getting some extra time with her dad this morning. Hope that helps.

Just thought I would let everyone know that, you are right. She was fine today. She went in with her friends and told her Daddy bye. No tears, clinging, or anything. Thanks for the help.

She is young and might be frieghtened by this big change. Talk about it to her nad reassure her that at the end of everyday you will always be there to pick her up and take her home,
It was just to much for her today to start a new way of life with strangers and then go to the sitters on top of tat. She needs the reassuance of her parents at the end of the day right now.

How was her disposition once you left?

Fine, because you did not metion that there was any problems while she was there other than not eating a brownie. Is this really a problem?

It sound like my daughter that would tug at our heart string everytime she was dropped off. Don't go, take me with you, don't leave me. Let the teachers deal with her, you just walk out. No matter how hard. Pre school is a lot more entertaining than you.

Once we were gone she had a great time. If she insn't having a great time you need a new preschool. At three you deserve a great time.

She needs time to adjust. Be positive about school. If you're negative, she'll pick up on that. It may take a few weeks before she's OK with going to school. Give her time. Also, a quick goodbye is best, otherwise it upsets the child to hang around. Most children just cry a few minutes then they're OK. She may cry again when you pick her up, but that's typical. I've been teaching pre K for 18 years.

The uneasiness will probably last at least the first week of school, maybe into a second week - but its normal. Really, it is. Soon she'll be off to school and be so casual and independent about it that you'll look back on this and laugh. Its tough when they first start but she'll be OK soon. Hang in there.

Give it a few more times and if it doesn't get any better then take her out of school. SHe is only three and there is always next year for preschool. Some kids need the extra year to mature before handling school.

Of course she's going to be unhappy at a sudden change - it's just her first day! :) Give her time to adjust to a new environment, and make sure you talk to her and make her feel safe at preschool.
