What was used to create the Japanese wave?

I remember when I was in grade 6, we had to recreate our own versions of pictures using similar medium. One of them, which I never got around to recreating myself, I believe was "The great wave of Kanagawa" by Katsushika Hokusai. What medium would he have used for his original picture?

It's a woodblock print, hand-coloured with ink. Pretty superb piece of art.
