We bought a Lightning McQueen (Disney's "Cars") stuffed toy on Sunday for my 4 yr old daughter and she fell in love with it. Took it all over the place Sunday.
On Monday, she forgot it at my parents' house at the Labor Day BBQ. When we got home, she was crying hysterically before going to bed that she "promised" Lightning she would never forget him anywhere. So i promised her i'd get it back for her by today.
So i got up at 4:30 this morning and drove to work, rather than take my train in. And i'm coming home a hero, i guess.
But am i a push-over? Should i have just waited for the weekend?

you are doing the right thing; clearly this toy is special, and it was brand new. It is fine to do this once or twice, just don't get in the habit of giving in to unreasonable demands. You'll know if she is manipulating you or if she is really upset. Follow your instincts, but don't go overboard. BTW, I think you sound like a great dad!

No you are a father who loves his daughter. This is what parents do when they love their children. It has nothing to do with being a push over. After all she is only 4. It isn't as if she is 16 and wanted a Mercedes and you went out and made the purchase and had it waiting in the driveway. You care about your daughter and I find it endearing.

Good For U! She will love you bunches and I am sure she is daddy's little girl. You are a wonderful daddy!

Hahaha, yeah, you are a pushover, but you had the best of intentions. Please remember that your daughter, even though she's little and a princess, needs to learn to be responsible. You could have explained to her that Lightning is perfectly safe at grandma's house, but unfortunately since she forgot it, she will have to wait a few days to get it back. You might think she learned her lesson anyways, since she was so upset, but really what you taught her is that YOU will fix HER mistakes. You're a very loving dad, that's for sure. But please try a little harder to teach your kids responsibility. I recommend the shows "Supernanny" and "Nanny 911," they are highly educational LOL! Good luck Dad.

Getting a 4 year old to sleep is the more important issue here. I would have done the same thing! Way to go Hero!

That's so sweet. My husband would of done the same thing for one of our daughters. You're just trying to be the very best dad who wants to make his girl happy. Pat yourself on the back and know you made your little girl's day by saving her Lightning McQueen!

You should have waited til the weekend, for two reasons. To teach your daughter the responsibility of keeping track of her belongings, and to show her that crying hysterically does not get her positive results. She may expect you to do this type of heroic act from now on. And the request will only get bigger, the tears will only get bigger, and she will be impossible to deal with.

How often will you get the chance to be a hero to her?

You'll have plenty of time to teach her about living with disappointment. Enjoy the hero-worship while it lasts.

omg i think its adorable. children, especially girls, grow to be very cose to their tos..when she talked about that promise---she was serious. and yes youre coming home as a hero. granted you should teach her about keeping up with her things (not saying you dont--children will be children!) and she IS only 4..if she was 6...then well i wouldnt have stood for it. so like others have said...choose your battles wisely..but explain your actions to them, even at this age:-)

this is a nice thing to do but she would have lived w/o the toy and she probably would have forgotten about the toy by the next day anyway!! but at least you love your kid--this is rare nowadays!!

You can be a hero this time, but take off the Superman Cape next time.
