I know a lot about building muscle but not much about lifting weights with the intent to get ripped. I want to set up a workout for my friend who wants to lose weight. He's going to start off warming up by playing basketball and then running for at least 30 minutes.

When you're building muscle, it's usually beneficial to only work out a couple of muscle groups per day. What about when you're trying to get ripped? I'm pretty sure he should use less weight and not do too many reps, since he isn't built yet, but I'd like some other suggestions. Thanks.

YOu can give your friend moral support and encouragement. Also, see the Encylcopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray and Pizzorno) for an excellent chapter on Obesity and also on how to eat a diet for health and weight control.

If he is wanting to lift to increase his weight loss and not really get ripped he's going to want to work the upper body one day, the lower body the next and keep rotating. That way he isn't overworking any area and building, nice lean, calorie burning muscle. Once he starts losing the fat and feels the change in his body I'm sure he's gonna want to start upping the weight lifting and get ripped too. Wish him luck for me! By the way his routine sounds pretty good to start with, but remember he's going to have to change up his routine and add more distance and time in order to keep his body working and his metabolism pumping. After so long your body gets used to the same routines and starts to plateau....And lastly, remind him to drink plenty of water which is key to keeping hydrated for his running as well as being needed for good muscle growth.
