it is actually anti lock brake system. If that is what you are talking about it is where when you try to stop the car by pressing the breaks real fast that it doesn't lock up on ya

Pretty much just what it says..a system that prevents the brakes from locking up and sending you into a skid. The brakes automatically grab and release very quickly to help you keep control and stop in a straight line.

First, you misspelled it: it is an ANTI-LOCK braking system (ABS).
This system is designed to release and then reapply the brakes on your car (about 20 to 30 times per second, depending on the manufacturer) to help you keep control of your car in slippery conditions like ice, gravel,sand, light snow, wet tree leaves, etc. in a hard braking situation, like a panic stop to avoid an accident.
The correct way to use the ABS is to slam hard on the brakes and to keep your foot in as much as you can; the system will detect when a wheel is about to lock up and release pressure and reapply it very quickly. It is important to remember to BRAKE HARD and to keep applying the brakes hard in order to take full advantage of an ABS system.

Hi,
I believe you meant "Antilock Braking System". It is a system which prevents the wheels getting locked up in the event of heavy breaking, or on slippery roads.

"antilock" does what it says on the tin. it stops the wheels locking. the brakes rapidly stop and start while braking (hence the noise if you break hard) this stops the wheels locking and skidding. it allows you greater control to steer whilst braking fully. hope you never need to use it - if you do at least you will have greater control.

the old style brakes would "grab" to stop the car and they would lock up all the time and the car would spin out of control and wreck. the new anti-lock brakes tap very quickly to stop the car creating less friction and a safer stop.

by decreasing the circumferential velocitity using air pumps to oscillate the contact time of the brake pad the wheels are encouraged to slow down in a not so abrupt manner this prevents skids that could cause steering impossibillity and tus preventing crashes the this causes a decrease in tire/steering stiffness .it does however create a longer /slightly/ distance capability their is supposed to be a very sensitive algorithm governance that dictates the most benevolent distance required for safety of cars and pedestrians ,,,they are highly evolved

It is anti-lock brakes. It works by applying force on the tires where the sensors indicate the greater slippage is. It is so you do not lock up all 4 tires and just slide.

They are actually referred to as anti-locking breaks. This means that if you ever slam on your breaks your breaks will not "lock" up. They will pump for you which helps with not losing control or sliding out as if your breaks were locked.
