I don't know anyone who has been stung by a Stingray at Grand Caymans' Stingray City. However, there are a few people who have been stung elsewhere around the islands. These people where fine in no time. They did suffer with pain and a small lesion but were never in danger of dying.
I would highly recommend going to Stingray City and if, in the unlikely event that you are stung, you should immerse you foot/ankle(usually where the sting occurs) in the warmest water that you can find for one to one and one half hours as this will neutralize any poison that may have been injected.
Throughout the years me and some of my guide friends have sustained 'hickeys' as the Rays literally suck their food into their mouths. The reason for this is that they don't have teeth. Instead, their mouths are made up of a cartilage-like material.
My friends and I horse around a bit by rubbing squid juice(squid is a delicacy for the Stingrays and is what most tourists are given to feed them)on one another and they will use their powerful vaccuum on the spot where they smell the squid. They make this mistake because they are so close to you that they cannot see that it isn't the food because their mouths are on their bottom side and the eyes are on top
Please do enjoy these majestic and very docile creatures. Steve Irwin's accident was a very isolated and unfortunate incident and should not sway anyone from enjoying nature up close. Furthermore, the Stingray that got to him was HUGE. There are none of that size around Grand Cayman.
I hope this has been helpful. Have a great day!

I highly recommend Stingray City. It was a fabulous experience and I recommend it to everyone I know going to the area. The rays are very docile and act more like kittens because they like to brush up against your legs. The water isn't very deep and its best to get on one of the excursions that gets out as early as possible. Our boat got there around 10:00 a.m. and by 10:30 there were hundreds of people being let off by other boats that had shown up. Once the rays are fed and full, they don't really want to be around anymore.

Do remember to shuffle your feet when you're in the water to avoid stepping on any rays that might be lying on the ocean floor (water is not deep and you can stand on the sandbar). Take along some snorkeling equipment. That was fun too.

Have a great time.

We did this tour in March, 07. It was disappointing. As I recall, it was about $100 per person plus tips for the bus driver that was over 90 minutes late in picking us up at the pier. Hell was a huge disappointment. It is a rock formation in front of a convenience store that sells $30 tee-shirts. We spent all of about 15 minutes there. We were rushed at the Turtle Farm so we really did not get to enjoy it. The Stingray Tour was OK. The sand bar was so crowded by the time we arrived. That tour just tries to fit too much into the amount of time that you have in GC. We returned to Grand Cayman this year and did the Boatswain's Deluxe Beach Break in GC. You get to use the salt water lagoon at the Turtle Farm for snorkeling and watch them hand feed the sharks. Plus there is a pool and beach. We got more time at the Turtle Farm and it was great the second time. Whatever you chose on GC, allow plenty of time to tender (ride the ferry) back to your ship. The lines can get really long the later you wait in the day.

My husband and I went last year and we were literally surrounded by hundreds of stingrays - and it was sooo much fun.

Our tour guides did warn us of the possibility of being stung, but in their 5 years of business had never had a customer stung. If you shuffle your feet and are aware of your surroundings, you will not have a problem. They are very friendly! And remember, these stingrays are used to having hundreds of tourists come and feed them everyday.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the stingray that killed Steve Irwin was over 220 lbs. That is a MASSIVE stingray. You won't see anything of that size at Stingray City.

Stingray City was one of the highlights of our trip - don't miss it!

I was wondering how long it would take before someone freaked about this. No offense.
Stingrays are really very docile. I have swam with them many times in Belize and Bora Bora. What happened in Australia was a freak accident I believe. Somehow the ray was startled or Steve Irwin was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had he gotten stung in any other place other than his chest he probably would have been ok.
