just because its sore and red does not mean its infected-it could just be irritated due to the movement and change of jewelry. Infections are usually red, sore, warm to touch, swollen, yellow/green pus discharge. Do warm sea salt soaks 2x a day for 10min 1/8tsp to 8oz water. This will get blood flow to the area and help it heal. Rings are not the best jewelry as they get knocked around to much and can rotate crusties and bacteria into the wound-a curved barbell with small balls is the best bet for healing. do not use ointments-they're not for punctures..piercings are punctures, and alcohol is very damaging.

I was told by my body piercer to get a shot glass and put contact lens solution in it. Turn the shot glass upside down on your belly pierceing and hold it there for 5 minutes. Do this twice a day. I did it cuz mine got infected twice. It cleared it up in about a day or two. Good luck.
Oh and the infection comes from your belly ring sliding up and down and pulling stuff down into the hole. Trust me, try the contact solution. I also told my sister to do it and it worked for her too.

Go back to the routine you first followed when your piercing was new:
Clean thoroughly with alcohol gel on a cotton swab, making sure to turn the ring through the hole to clean the inside.
Use antibiotic ointment, also turning the ring in order to carry the cream to the inside.

Go to the dr and get an antibiotic b/c an infection there is no joke....can cause major health problems. Also switch to as small a barbell (with nothing on it to snag on clothes etc) and use an antiseptic wash on it. One that works well is the ear care solution they sell at Claire's (a piercing store in the mall in case you aren't familiar with it)

Best advice... talk to your piercer. I had mine pierced for 3 years and it NEVER healed. I took it out and developed bad scar tissue in it. I got so tired of it I went back in and asked the piercer if he could re-do it with a little larger guage... It never gave me trouble after that (even while that piercing was healing).

Here is an idea....stop poking holes in your body! Any idiot can tell you that infection needs a way to get into the body. By indiscriminately poking holes in your body, you open the door for infections.
