First and foremost, whenever I complained about my homework someone dear to me (who happens to be an engineer) always told me "it's engineering, it's supposed to be hard, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it." So, yes, it's difficult, but not out of reach.

If you are seriously interested in robotics, you should look for a university that does some significant work with them so you will have the opportunity to study under experts first hand.

If you are not too sure that you are that focused, you may want to look at electrical engineering. It is one of the "intangiables" but you can transition into a graduate program if your interest in robotics continues. Electrical engineering is in high demand (a friend of mine just graduated and had three offers in excess of $55k), but it is a different thought process. You may even consider doubling with mechanical so you can work with something a little more tangiable.

Doubling is heavy duty, however. You may want to look up your nearest IEEE (electrical engineering professional group) or ASME (mechanical engineering professional group) chapter to see if there is someone that could give you a tour or that you could shadow, etc. to get a better idea of what's out there.

Mechatronics is the field of engineering you are talking about. There you will learn how to make it all work together, with sensors, motors, mechanics and programming. You may also want to check out automation and robotics. Different names for almost the same thing.
You can of course specialize in mechanics, electronics or computer programming as well.
I have no idea how much demand there is in the USA for engineers.

Robotics requires a strong understanding of both mechanical and electrical engineering, along with computer input/output technology and programming.

The answer is always the same. It doesn't matter which is the most demanding, highest paid, etc.

Any engineering degree is just the beginning. You can take it where ever you want and are capable of going.

What matters is what do you enjoy and are good at.

I am a retired N.A.S.A Eng. worked my way up to network trouble shooter. Electronics with computer on side. It was good to me ,enjoyed it much.If u go at it u got to apply yourself.
Good luck

most demanding i would say chemical and civil.
robotics would be under mechanical engrg. i would say mechanical is probably 3rd hardest, following computer system and electrical.
