The answer to your question is NO.

You may pay in cash, credit or debit to settle your on board account.

No deposit is required as security and if you are sailing you have already paid for your passage.

Your on board account is for all charges made during your sailing and will need to be settled before you turn in the night before you finally debark at the end of your cruise.

Your best bet is to contact the cruise line that you are interested in taking to find out their policy. Cash is typically not accepted on board, they basically charge everything to your room, but we've always used a credit card to secure this. I know they give you the option to cash out at the end of the cruise, but I don't know what their policy is on cash deposits as it probably varied by cruise line. : )

I know that at least while it is RECOMMENDED it is not forced upon Royal Caribbean passengers.

I was lucky to get put on my mom's credit card before we went on a cruise, but my friend did not get her own credit card or on her parents in time. She was forced to give money upfront for their ship card that you use to pay for things. I believe she had to put $200 on it (I'm not sure if that was US or Canadian funds) and she had a limit on her card of the same amount.

Hope this helps. Your best bet is to contact the cruiseline.

Most lines require that you have a credit card, but most cruise lines will also work with you if you do not have one. You can use traveler checks, but they will hold a lot of them.

if you don't have a credit card or a debit card and don't won't to carry that much cash, you can always go to the bank and get an american express prepaid card. don't get the gift card because you cannot use it outside of the united states. i would recommend getting two cards, one for your cruise and one for your purchases off the ship.

Most cruise lines require you to have one. They imprint it and use it for your on-ship purchases, such as drinks or shore tours.

No, you do not. You can use a debit card or even cash as a security for your sail / sign account. I usually use my debit card.
