Having a genuine feeling of significance actually "makes" life meaningful for most people...but significance is not a birthright...it's acquired by actually "doing" something that makes one fulfilled or proud of him/herself. It uasually comes in the form of helping someone else in some small (large) way. That's the easiest form of significance, because there are so many hundreds of ways to do it. Just help someone do something they cannot do on their own, but you can do quite easily. We all have talents that we think are meaningless to the point that we don't even consider them as actual talents. They're just things we can do that we usually take for ganted that everyone else can do, too.
How 'bout an example?
Reading!!! If you can read well or if you can just barely read, you can do something many hundreds of people around you can't do at all! Not necessarily because they don't know how but because they may be legally blind, have macular degeneration, cateracts, etc. Being available to read to someone, if only once/twice a week, for minutes at a time, is a talent they do not have and one that will offer much satisfaction to the reader. Of course some young children can't read or can't read up to grade level. Just having someone read to them, rutinely, over time, can encourage and inspire them to learn to read better. That's significance!!! Is it one of those earthshaking forms of significance? Maybe, maybe not...but it can be "life changing" for the beneficiary...which could actually become earthshaking if that kid/person becomes the President, a great author, the Pope, etc. WHO KNOWS??? SOMEBODY HAS TO BECOME THOSE FOLKS!!!
Well, that was just one of many talents we may have that others do not. Want to feel significant? Do something good for someone else, no matter how small it seems to you. Just start doing something for somebody.

Life is what we make of it. We can make a full, meaningful life for ourselves.
The kind of life we have is empty and meaningless compared to the one that we will have in Paradise.
We are significant to God, since he made us and he cares for us, but we do have to be humble about it all. 1 Peter 5:6,7

Who is "we?" And who said "we" think life is "empty and meaningless?"
I don't think I'm significant in the grand scheme of the universe, but I work with what I have.

It is a simple reaction to the fact we evolved in such a way that spiritual expression was adaptive for early humans. That sense of 'why' is a lingering remnant of an era where instinct had to guide our spirituality because we couldn't survive in the world if we couldn't have faith in some basic constants, and that we'd find things where we left them, etc.
