Since the owner receives rent and/or commission from the other stylists that work for him/her, do they expect to be tipped in the same manner that we would tip those same stylists?

She is performing the same service as everybody else. She shouldn't be punished, ie not tipping, just because she is smart enough to start and run her own shop.

I tip the stylist, not the owner.

If the stylist owned the shop, I would tip her - but more like 10-15% rather than 15-20% unless I felt that I didn't care if I gave her a better tip.

I'd probably tip a little more. Anywhere from 20-25%. Since they own the shop, they do have more expenses & if they are the owner, they probably have more experience. Best bet with hairdressers - if you take care of them, they will take care of you. You never want to make them mad! --- As far as the previous answers, you don't tip the owner on a regular basis if you are getting your hair done. But if you are getting your hair done BY THE OWNER, then yes, you do.

If she's providing good service, I'd tip her just the same as a regular stylist. If she's just "pencilled you into her busy schedule" and merely instructs someone else what to do with you (god I've been there before) she definitely shouldn't get tipped.

Tip whatever you feel like tipping. If you think the owner does a great job, and better than anyone else, go for the extra tip. If you don't think the cut was great, then skip the tip or give a smaller one.

Most of the time I tip 15%.

Owners should be seen as professionals and shouldn't be tipped. But then I still don't understand tip jars for take out.

I tip 15-30% depending on how my hair looks, the amount of work they put into it, and how engaging they were while getting it done.
