It's one way of making sure the customer is over 18, and old enough to enter into a contract with the minimum of fuss. If you are over 18, why not get a credit card, and just make sure you pay off all the balance each month.

Merchants often pay a fee per card they have to accept - I was told in one shop they didn't take a certain card because the sales didn't justify the fees they had to pay for it. Stores also incur costs for fraudulent transactions, and I've seen sites openly refusing to take cards because they didn't have the same level of fraud prevention as MasterCard and Visa. Finally, sites generally don't process cards themselves - their bank or external provider does, and they can only accept what the service offers.

Try writing to the sites in question, or they won't know the demand's there.

If you make a purchase with a credit card and things don't work out, you have recourse to the card issuer.

If you make a purchase with a debit card and things don't work out, you will have to sort it out with the vendor. And if the vendor has gone missing, you will be out of pocket.

So the answer to your question is no. If you are buying product from the UK, the purchase should be in £.

It depends on what kind of company you are and whether or not your customers would feel safe making that kind of transaction. Our company Kiss Me Comix has been set to accept all kinds of debit and credit cards, along with foreign currency, but we still have it to where folks can purchase via e-mail if they are concerned with privacy or security
