My daughter has been invited to a wedding and her date is one of the groomsmen wearing a tux. Is it appropriate for her to wear a semi formal type dress above the knee or should it be longer...should it be less formal?

I think it is appropriate, yes. I have been to several weddings lately and quite a few guests have been dressed in such attire. I am getting married as well and I would be perfectly fine with someone wearing such a dress (even if their date is in a tux).

Well it really depends on the wedding but style. Since the wedding party is wearing tuxes I would almost say no. I would say the groomsman should get some more info on the wedding. What style bridesmaids dresses are they? Short or long, if they are short no questions asked of course they are okay. If the dresses are long, and it is a sit down meal then she should wear something long since he is wearing a tux. He really should find out some more info. He could always just ask the bride and groom they will be honest!!

If the invitation says black tie formal, then she must wear a longer dress - but as long as the wedding is fairly formal/casual - she is fine in the above the knee dress.

if it's a morning wedding it's OK to wear a semi formal dress above the knee, but if it's in the evening she should wear an evening dress.

Above the knee... as in, an inch or two? or above the knee, as in barely covers her behind or only hits at mid-thigh? If it's only an inch or two above the knee, that's likely to be fine. Anything shorter than that is completely inappropriate for a wedding.

Of equal importance, however, is the rest of the dress. The hemline is important, but is it low cut? Revealing? Strapless? Transparent? Any of those would also be inappropriate.

Sleeveless would be fine, but spaghetti straps or strapless would not - regardless of skirt length.

If he is wearing a tux it must be a formal, night wedding, yes? That means a long dress or gown.

I would say yes, with a couple exceptions:

1) If the invite said that the affair was "black-tie".

2) The wedding was after 5 or 6pm.

She's fine. Basically, if you look nice enough to go to a formal church service, you look nice enough to go to a wedding.

As long as it is not thigh high. This is the Bride's day, not for anyone else to call attention away from her.
