My mom's dog is a mental case and she is moving into senior apartment housing and can't keep the dog. It's a german shephard with schitzo issues and she doesn't want to take a chance on someone adopting her from the pound and then mistreating it because it doesn't mind, it barks, etc. Also the dog has SUCH anxiety. So she just thinks she should let the dog go to sleep rather than take a chance on her switching owner after owner until someone keeps her.
What do you think? Will a vet do this?

Most vets would refuse to put down a perfectly healthy dog. A good rescue group would be able to find the correct home for his dog - don't you think he deserves a chance?

I am an animal lover and I can see where you are coming from. She would never do it by choice I'm sure, but she can no longer care for this dog. I would try to find a trainer. Dogs can be reformed with the right trainer. All the people who say that is cruel- Is it more humane to have the dog live in a cage for a week only to get put down by strangers? No one will adopt a barking snarling dog. Just the facts. Or perhaps he can be donated to animal testing centers. Did you know that some shelters are required to give some of their animals over to testing in order to maintain funds? Putting an animal in a shelter is the ultimate form of cruelty. I'm sure he would rather be dead than caged. Oh yeah- I forgot to answer your question- Yes, I think many vets will do it as long as he has a documented history of problems- they will see it as you do. They are more aware of how cruel shelters are than these people on here.

I will say a breed rescue group is probably your best option.

If you explain the situation to the vet and if you believe the dog is dangerous the vet will do it. You might want to consider a German Shepherd breed rescue group. A lot of people have Shepherd and have not given them proper training or mental stimulation to keep them happy. The breed rescue groups realize this and maybe able to help the dog. I know of people who have had animals put to sleep for other reasons other than being sick and I don't think any of them had problems. But consider giving the dog a chance, and a German Shepard rescue group would be the dogs best shot.

This a terrible thing to want. The people who would adopt it from the pound know how to handle a dog like this. Because a dog has issues with this person does not mean he can;t build a better relationship with someone else. Maybe someone who invests time training it and giving it affection. Any dog can become a Mighty Dog. :-)

I think most vets would rather see you try to adopt out the dog. I know they will put to sleep a healthy animal that has been proven dangerous to people. You might want to find a local German Shepard rescue to help you out. Also a behavioral trainer for dogs would probably be able to help your dog out. It doesn't sound to me like your mom's dog can't be helped by a trainer.

You'd be AMAZED how many people love taking in dogs with issues, even serious health problems! Yes, as someone said above, contact associations that deal w/German Sheperds....there are bound to be rescue organizations that can place the dog with a loving family and even get it some rehab! Some organizations will even help you re-locate the dog.

The pound puts down the majority of dogs anyway, like maybe 90% of them. Only the cream of the crop have any chance of being adopted.

I would turn the dog over to the local dog rescue group and let them make the decision to see if the dog is adoptable or not

They will do it but check with rescues to help re home the dog. The shelter may euthanize. Owner give ups there is no hold time or gaurantee there is room in their adoption program.
