I would start w/ a bedspread and then move on to curtains. Try surfing the web for different sites. I would maybe try mixing and matching so that you don't have to much of one design. Go for fake palm trees or if you have a green thumb get a couple umbrella trees. I live in Ohio and I've one for about 10 years. Go w/ green, pink, purple, and yellow. Also surf the web for diffenent tropocal pictures. Or if your crafty come up w/ something on your own. Theres easy stuff to do. Examples....latch hook rugs and plastic canvas. You could also paint simple tropical picture or just colors by sponging the desired colors onto a canvas and hanging it on your wall. Go for a nice vase w/ a beautiful artificial arrangement, unless you can afford real everyweek or so. Also bright lights. You could also maybe do something w/ tikis. Good luck.

Decorating a beach resort theme without putting lots of holes in walls :

SCREW EYES screw into the ends of a dowel rod.\fold fabric in half long ways and put one half over the dowel rod. Spread the gathers evenly from end to end and pin with straight pins from one end to the other
turn the rod over and let the fabric drop. You now have a no sew covered dowel rod.
tie either twine or picture wire from one screw eye to the other and hang from a single scfrew hook (like a cup hook)
Then drape your fabric as you like it
you can get a hoop in the macrame section of the craft store, pin fabric wire and hang from a hook the gauzy canopy over your headboard.
wherever you buy ready made curtains or fabric they sell spring loaded tension rods that can be used to drape fabric in windows, closets or between two bookcases. They are just like those shower curtain rods only smaller.

ALSO,
Don't go silly with the palm tree themed borders or fabric, keep it clean, breezy and white or ecru. Don't be afraid to use what you have. distressed wood is a big part of beach decor. Shabby chic is a part of the same style with a few seaside accents. Look around and find a picture of a room you love then go with it.
and don't forget the lush greenery. You can grow live hanging plants like POTHOS or philodendron and use a nice full fake palm in a corner.

Get wallpaper or border with palm trees, of course. Buy some souveniers from tropical locations so it can be original. You can collect dolphins, sting rays, sharks, manatees, tiki hut pics, bamboo sticks, posters of the ocean, surf boards, sail boats etc...it's just up to you. Whatever things you enjoy most about the tropical life, collect, and enjoy!

Tropical plants/trees a must. Hardwood floor. Candles. Fur bedding. Soft glowing lighting. Sheer drapes.

start with the wall color. it should be a light blue, like aqua. make the rug tan, like the color of sand. trim can be white. then add accessories like shells and palm leaves. add some bright colors like you would find on a parrot.
this is starting to sound like some place i'd like to be right now!
good luck.
