You must give the plaster at least a week to dry before painting the smell should go in time but you may have to repaint

Yes this can happen for two reasons did you let the plaster dry out properly before applying the emulsion. And was the emulsion old as this can cause a bad smell.

I know these things as the same thing has just happened to me. Whilst I did leave the plaster to dry out properly I used old emulsion which I think has caused the problem. I tried everything to get rid of the smell over a six weeks period but nothing has worked. So today I went and bought some new emulsion and hopefully the smell will go once the walls have been repainted.

plaster needs to dry before you paint it, leave a window open for at least a week to get rid of the smell, if that does not work go to b@q or similiar speak to diy advisor, they are quite knowledgable and can maybe recomend a solution.

Did you wait for the plarster to dry, if so you could of used a painted sealet on the walls to seal it as it is new plarster, if you did not do this or you did you may have dame problems.
