Toyota diesel engines are very well known around the world. When you see a tacoma with a hood scoop, that scoop although cosmetic in the US is for the intercooler for a diesel. The diesel fuel available in the US is poor quality because of high sulfer content. This combined with the US's very strict regulation of emissions on diesels keeps them out of our market. The fuel is changing and the demand for better mileage has also pushed Toyota to work toward US diesel vehicles. It is uncertain whether we will see any in the near future however. I hope we do, but won't hold my breath.

BTW Hino is Toyota's heavy truck division, so you can already get some toy diesels, just not what you want.

I heard the FJ Cruiser was going to be made into a diesel truck but diesel is no longer the "cheaper" fuel like it once was.

A truck/SUV will always be less fuel efficient, living in Canada and in a part of Canada that gets a lot of snow and within a city that always runs out of money to clean the streets in the middle of winter, I decided mobility and peace of mind was better then a fuel efficient car that would get stuck.

The Yaris is great on gas, I rented one last week... too cute..

Toyota already make diesel pick ups. They just don't market them in the US. In South Africa we have the Hilux (Tacoma too you) in 2.5 and 3 liter turbo diesels( common rail). We also get the Land Cruiser Pick up with a 4.2 liter diesel.
