Examining my Bic Ultra pen I noticed the cap has a hole in the cap, presumably to let ink flow out in case the pen explodes. Which seems like a bad idea. So perhaps the hole is to prevent pressure which would cause an explosion? Which leads to my question...Why do pens explode?

Someone did alude to the reason that the pen is vented. If you were to take an unvented pen to a high altitude, the unvented pressure would force ink past the ball and make a mess of your shirt pocket. It doesn't explode, just leaks.
