I read that severely depressed individuals don't dream, but I donn't know if they meant dreams that the person remembers or just dreams in general, and I don't know why this is.

I read it in the Sunday paper, which is not a very reliable source, which is why I asked.

I am a clinical psychiatrist since 1971, an I never heard of any depressed person even on psychotropics, mind altering drugs, or antidepressants preventing you from having dreams.

They all dream and some even have nightmares. Ofcourse you can dream and wake up and don't remember the dream you had.

You did not state where you read this material/data.

Patients will tell me what their dreams were an I will try to give them an interpretation of their dreams.

Depressed ppl don't have "dreams of the future". They just have a hard enough time seeing past the next slow, painful hour. Night dreams, oh yeah! One tends to have horrid, continuous dreaming at night. Often very bizarre, stresssful, and frightening. So much so that it interrupts normal sleep. And antidepressants can make it worse...

Actually, people who suffer from depression tend to have more frequent and more vivid dreams. It's because of the sleep cycle, because we have REM sleep and non REM sleep. Dreaming occurs in the stage of REM sleep, which occurs at the beginning of the night when you fall asleep, and then again just before you wake up in the morning. People who are depressed tend to never enter the nonREM stage of sleep, and spend most of the night in REM sleep, hence they dream a lot.

I've suffered from severe depression, and I never really used to dream - but since I've been depressed, I dream a LOT.

thats not true depressed people do dream because before you go to bed, if you think about the events in your life or the successions that have you depressed, theres an 80% chance your mind will create images of depression

Everybody dreams; they just don't remember what they dream.

Also, depressed people do dream. They just may not remember it, like I said.

Most of my dreams are rather morbid. *mumbles* I remember most of my dreams, unfortunately, and I hate the things I dream about, especially when I'm depressed.
