If it is made of canvass, you must first prime it with gesso so that the paint will stick. Then you can add fabric medium to any latex or acrylic paint or use store bought fabric paint. Then, you must seal it with a non-yellowing polyurethane to make it weatherproof and it must be rated for fabric. You can find all of these products at Dick Blick on line or in the stores and at some craft stores. But, we used the exterior product line that Blick carries and had no problems over time.

No NO NO
You do NOT prime the ti-pi with gesso. It isn't a stretched canvas or medieval art.
You paint it in the spirit of its tradition but with the materials available to you today or you paint it in the tradition of it's spirit with colors of the earth made from clays or plants.
I use a latex house paint or is I need a special color and don't want to buy a gallon, I use Floetrol and tint it with acrylic craft paint, the floetrol is cloudy when wet but absolutely clear when dry and gives makes a great wash, to thicken the wash, I add some of my base color latex house paint. Four parts Floetrol, one part acrylic craft paint, onehalf part white or black house paint.
