I don't think it has much to do with it. I personally think that there's something below the baby talk, such as a learning or vision problem. There are some words I couldn't get my mouth around as a child, and still can't, due to dyslexia. I wasn't diagnosed as dyslexic until I was an early teen, after mom and dad divorced, and after my father had ruined my self esteem with insults and curses over my problem.

I agree with Rose, it can slow them down.
A good example is this. My daughter is now 3 and has almost perfect speach. She has been talking full, coherent sentences since she was just about two. We never baby talked her as I believe it is harmful to children's speach developmant. Her cousin is the same age and was baby talked, well he still is baby talked, and his speak is very limited. My daughter, even though they are the same age, doesn't like to play with him because "he doesn't talk properly mommy!" She would rather play with kids that can communicate on her own level.
What you do in raising your boy is your own choice though! If you think that he is developing "normally" then by all means keep it the way it is. You are his mother and you know him best :) Please keep in mind that I am just giving my opinion, and honestly, opinions are like @$$holes....everybody has one!

I believe there is a danger of his learning baby talk.
Perhaps a mix would be OK, including talking to him at a high level, on topics that are over his head, just so he experiences true grown-up talk (besides, you've got a captive audience for all of the things you otherwise never get to give lectures on, such as politics and philosophy).

Depends. Some say it helps them learn phonics better. Some say it slows them down. We did both and our daughter is just fine. She's 14 months old and speaks quite well for her age. Just make sure that you speak in a normal voice often to him so that he can learn how he is supposed to talk. Much of what he learns he learns from you so if you want him to talk in gibber gabber instead of normal speak when he really has to go to the bathroom choose wisely I guess!

I agree that sometimes babies respond to "baby talk" but I really don't know if it slows them down or not. I would make sure that you don't do it as much now since he is likely to repeat it more now since he is year. I wouldn't worry if I were you, but Good Luck.

I think you should do what feels right for you and your child. Everyone has an opinion and believes it to be right, but the fact is that no child is exactly like any other child, and the same applies to parents. When I had my first child, everyone and their mother had all kinds of advice for me. I took it all with a grain of salt and did and still do what I feel is right for us. If you want to "baby talk" with your child, do it:) He'll still learn to talk. It's not like he'll be speakin gjibberish in the 12th grade!

my brother-in-law baby talked to all 3 of his girls throughout most of their childhoods. one grew up with no speech issues, one turned into a smartass who baby talked to him when she was angry, the last one baby talked until she was 14 and underwent intense speech therapy. i guess i'm on the fence with this one.
