Most coats and crests are given to a specific individual and inherited by to oldest legitimate son. If you are high enough in the food chain, you get one issued to yourself.

People who sell plaques, t-shirt sand coffee mugs perpetuate the myth of a "Family" coat of arms. What you get is a C of A that was issued to a Ritter, maybe. It may have bee issued to a Ritter you are related to; it may not. If your surname is Smith, you'll have a choice of dozens, so you can pick a plaque that goes well with the colors in your living room when you hang it with pride.

Look at the bottom of a full-page advertisement for Land Rovers - they are, by Royal Warrant, providers of motor cars to Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip and Prince Charles. Each of the royals have a different C of A; they don't all use the "Windsor" family one.
