a warrant officer is not a commissioned officer. they come up from enlisted....

Someone had a really good explanation I'll try to find it for you.

"A Warrant Officer is a specialist in his field. IN MOST cases, this is a prior service enlisted person. In order to go to Warrant Officer Candidate School, an individual MUST have a certain amount of college. Experience alone does not cut it. The enlisted person must also be in a "feeder" MOS, ie, to be CID you must have been a MP. This is not always the case. Pilots, for example, don't have a "feeder" MOS.

There is a way to go WOCS directly from civilian life, but you will have to have a degree, and there are nuances that I am not aware of. Your recruiter will have further information on this.

The WO is the best of both worlds. He/she is not enlisted, but he/she is also not an officer. They are the specialists in their field.

If by "command", you mean be in charge of a company/battalion/brigade, then the answer is "NO". Unless, of course, he is the senior officer in charge. Even then, he will be replaced by a "real" officer.

A warrant officer is between enlisted and commissioned officers. They are individuals who enlisted, like most at the beginning, worked their way up to at least staff sergeant (at least in the Corps), and decided to become specialists in their jobs. They usually get more respect from the enlisted, since they are prior enlisted, and there openings for warrant officer in the corps are very limited. If I remember correctly, the corps only has warrant officers in NBC, Motor T, and Armory

We had a Senior chief(E-8) on my sub make warrant. They are experts in their field. He was an electrician's mate. Not sure where he went after, but it was a desk job, I'm sure. The main change was instead of calling him "Senior Chief" we called him "Sir." They are outside of the E- and O- chains of command. There is CWO1- CWO4. Their device is a blue band with gold stripes.
