A barbershop caters towards men, and usually only does hair cuts and maybe color; Whereas, a salon is for women and men, and they usually do color, nails, etc.

I own a salon and I am a Master Barber. The difference is in services offered and personal style. I am a barber to my man clients and i offer salon services to my women clientele. I provide a lot of mens services that they can only get here in a barber shop setting. Hot shaves, certain skin maintenance. Chemical services make no difference as men get perms and colors. Though old time barbers usually don't have enough practical use of some of that knowledge.

Barbers cut men's hair and salons usually, but not always cut women's hair.

Like people say, as a bloke I cannot understand how salons get away with charging so much for basic haircuts - obviously perms and so on are a different matter. Mind you, if a woman ever gets a haircut in a barber's (I have seen the barber where I live do one) the results are awful.

barber shops uasually just do cuts alot of clipper cuts and salons and thats what there lisenced for and a salon does cuts perms nails skin color.I also noticed that barbers do great flat tops and stuff but there regular cuts seem less blended and more top heavy but thats just a personal opionion .Also I used to work with a barber at my salon and she blends hair grat and does perms so I also think its different now a days depending on how old you are and when you went to school

Barber shops cater to men and usually offer shaving as a service (good old fashioned straight razor shaves). Beauty salons offer services to both men and women, but more extensive services like perms, color, highlights and also carry wide varieties of products.

Back in the day a barber shop is where you went for blood lettings. Apparantly the red and white spinning device indicated the location for your bloodlettings. Check it out!
