It's as believable as any other mythology. Just because you don't see an Athenian temple on the corner doesn't mean there aren't believers.
I do agree with the premise of your second quesion, though. It's quite likely that our ancestors will have a different belief than ours in 1,000 years. Truth has little to do with it; religion is more about what people want to hear than about what is actually true.

Some people (notably Wiccans) worship and honor some of the Greek and Roman God/Goddesses. Just as the Hebrews took over local Canaanite gods for their God, Yod Heh Vav Heh, the Roman Catholics took gods and made them their own. Many of the early "saints" were local gods just dressed up with a little bit of paint and holy water. The cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary is hardly different from Isis (who was brought to Rome after Egypt fell).
Islam claims to supercede Christianity as Christianity superceded Judaism. The Baha'is claim that they are the next step beyond Islam. The Latter Day Saints use elements of Christianity in their belief structure. Rev. Moon claims to be Jesus reborn.I do not know what god(s) Scientology claims now.
Rather than a complete take over, look for a gradualism. The symbols of the past are reinterpreted by the present and then changed once again by the future. Just look at the difference Yod Heh Vav Heh has gone thru since Leviticus to that God preached about in a Methodist or Episcopal sermon.

Monotheism replaced Polytheism; Buddhism co-exists alongside Monotheism. There are very few practictioner's of Polytheism today (primarily India, Ceylon, Shinto in Japan). Monotheist's believe in a single omnipotent being; albiet that being may have a son or an appointed leader; while Buddhism teaches to seek salvation from within, not external to yourself. Buddhists believe that all life is a universal force - similar to an omnipotent being; however, different, in that the universal life force permeates the cosmos. So, shall philosohy continue to evolve, of course it will. If we view how philosophy and religion has changed in the past 50 years, then of course, people's own spritual believes will continue to grow and evolve over time as well. The never-ending question of whom we are and why we are is a part of our self-realization that we exist and we will pass on; therefore, the question's of what happens next, why are we here and who am I will always be a part of the human experience.

Sady it seems mankind needs ignorance like a drug.
I fear that no matter how enlightened elements of society may become, the majority will always want to cling to the belief that "someone up there likes them".

This is what has been happenign for thousands of years now, no wonder why christianity is not original and keeps elements of previous religions. I dont understand why people cant see that history is always repeated and they think that we reached absolution now...lets see in 200 years...

About as believable as the Bible, only better written, more interesting characters and less preachy. Poor Zeus, it must be lonely to be a forgotten Deity.

Greek and Roman mythology was too complicated to keep track of for stupid people... "Hera? Which was she again? Oh yeah.... and Athena was Poseidon's sister? Huh? Children of what god?" Instead it's "One god, God. One son, Jesus. Don't be confused stupid people it's easy to understand."
