Dress warm (of course)
Look in to "under armor" instead of thermal underwear.
Founded in 1996 by former University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank, Under Armour is the originator of performance apparel - gear engineered to keep athletes cool, dry and light throughout the course of a game, practice or workout. The technology behind Under Armour's diverse product assortment for men, women and youth is complex, but the program for reaping the benefits is simple: wear HeatGear® when it's hot, ColdGear® when it's cold, and AllSeasonGear® between the extremes.

If you plan on driving be sure to purchase an all wheel drive car/truck with anti-lock breaks. With a shovel (to dig your car out), an ice-scrapper and tire chains. Be sure you know how to drive in the snow/ice before you get behind the wheel (see links below)

Are you crazy? Being cold is miserable. I lived in Pennsylvania a long time, winter is long, ugly, dark, depressing and you never really get warm, its hard to explain but its like a cold to your bones thing and it never quite goes away and it lasts for months and months, it seems endless, the sun may come out during the day but even it is cold. How do you prepare for it? You don't, there is really nothing you can do. You buy gloves, hats, scarves, supposedly warm coats, boots...none of it matters your feet and fingers will still freeze. You wear sweaters and sweatshirts and turtle necks and its hard to move in all the clothes you have to wear. When you go outside the air is so cold it will literally take your breathe away and its wet, everything is wet. Snow is pretty for about the first 10 minutes after it falls, then it gets dirty and everything is just covered with this mushy, wet, gray slush. And New York is soooooo ugly. Personally I think you'll be miserable but hec give it a try.

Buy winter clothes...?
Jackets, scarves, gloves, wool hats, ear muffs, long sleeved clothing, boots, etc. It's probably best to buy them in Southern California if they sell them because by the middle of November, good winter coats will cost an arm and a leg.
Don't worry, it's not like Antarctica here.
We don't normally get too much snow since salt is always tossed onto the sidewalks and plows come through the streets.

Last year sucked though, there was a hell of a lot of snow. I hope we don't get as much this year.

Look around THERE for warm-weather clothes. They have the right ones, all price ranges, that aren't available in other parts of the country---coats with linings, tough mittens (which are warmer than gloves), galoshes, etc. Don't waste your time shopping for these in California! Take care of your skin when you go outside in the cold weather---vaseline jelly is a good way to protect your face. In heated interiors, you'll also find your skin needs lots of lotion, all winter long. Watch your footing, and don't slip on icy steps or curbs.
Another hint for the Northeastern U.S. - learn to like muffins!
These people are rabid muffin lovers, and there are whole shops devoted to them.

So when the time is right, you'll go with your boyfriend and buy warmer clothes for winter months, gloves, sweaters, boots, etc. It's like someone from NY moving to Southern California and having to buy clothes for the warmer weather... same difference, really.

Girl, All I can say is LongJohns. They will warm you underneath your clothes, and make sure you have enough boots, jackets, gloves and ear muffs...it gets really cold up there...
