it is important to be b/c that is our New Year. We say goodbye to the things we want to let go and we look to things that need to be worked on, inside ourseleves and whatever other areas of our lives. It is the night when the veils are the thinnest. We can communicate with lost loved ones who have made it to the other side. It used to be called All Hallows Eve. It also marks the beginning of winter. We face the darkness but look forward to the new light that is not far behind. Life and death are celebrated in their many different forms. The name Samhain is irish Gaelic for the month of November. At Samhain, the Goddess is in her Crone aspect, the old wise women who will bring her gifts of insight and divination. It is a very powerful ritual!!!

Well, it's simply that it's rapidly become a tradition like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you know the history of Lammas, you know the significance of the date. That's about it, really. As for the rather hostile responses you've gotten - I suspect they relate more to your self-description as a mighty wizard than to anything else. You do know that male witches are NOT called wizards or warlocks, don't you? They're just wiccans. Its the women who work their way from maiden to priestess to crone. When a male shares leadership in a coven, he's never the ranking personage - he's either co-equal to the Priestess or her underling. No exotic names or titles append to the male wiccan.

In general....It is the end of the current year and the beginning of the next. A time to reflect on the year's accomplishments and set new goals. It is also a time to honor those who have passed and celebrate their lives.
Me personally....I reflect on my actions of the past year, what I've accomplished and what I haven't and why I didn't. I remember those close to me who have passed on and feast to the memories of our time together and what I've learned from them. I set aside any failures and missed goals and start anew with a fresh outlook.

Fireball - it says religion and spirituality. If you can't realize that it doesn't say Catholic or Christian then maybe you should suggest a different board just for your religion to Yahoo.
There are many religions and variations of them.
Grow up and realize that true believers (ie Christians) would not post like you have.

It's a time to reflect on the past year; to mourn the dead, to celebrate the victories, to look ahead with hope as we enter the dark half of the year.

I find it a great time to honor my loved ones and ancestors that have passed. I honor them with whats called a "dumb supper" and just remember them. And then all the pumpkin carving, costume parties, decorating, apple dumplings is just super fun!
