Singing is natural. There are techniques that you can use to project your voice in a better manner but there's not alot you can do. the best singers in the world were born with a great voice and perfect pitch. They learned some technique later. Perfect pitch is extremely important. Take any song that you remember and try to sing it without first hearing it. Then play the real song. If you were out of key, you are probably not a natural singer. I have perfect pitch. Not many people do. I am not bragging but I have noticed that VERY FEW folks can sing in the exact key without hearing the song first or having the music to sing along with.

Find a song or artist that you feel comfortable singing with and try to sing along with their songs turned down. Their vocals will serve as a guide to help you improve. Practice, practice, practice. It really does help. Learn techniques that are often taught by vocal coaches. Learn about head voice and chest voice to really pinpoint your range. And I know it sounds silly but sing karaoke. Not only will the audience let you know if you are on the right track, it will really give you a chance to see if you are doing the song's justice. To sing along with the radio and sound great is far easier than standing on your own and sounding great. Practice a song with the radio, then go to karaoke and sing it. If the response is good then maybe consider voice lessons but don't waste the money if you don't have any third-party feedback on your voice.
