We live in southern Georgia and come from the western part of the US. I can't get over how micro managed the children are in this part of the country. One mother was sent to jail because she had the nerve to get mad at the school official that had her leave work, go home, get a new pair of jeans for her son because they had a dime size hole on the inside of the knee and drive out to the high school which is in the next town (the children here are all bussed -another nightmare story) when she got to the school she really expected to see some sort of major offense with his attire, and when she saw the hole he had just created with a pencil (bordom ;) ) she got upset and told the people making an issue of this that "This is bullshit". She was arrested the next day by the sherriff assigned to the school because he claimed to be offended.
I'm not real sure where to place this question so I'm kind of posting it a few places I'd like to hear from.

YOU'RE FROM THE SOUTH AREN'T YOU? DO YOU KNOW THE WOMAN THAT WAS ARRESTED? WELL, INTELLEGENCE, IT WASN'T ME. SEE, I WAS AT THE SCHOOL WHEN IT HAPPENED, BRINGING A NEW SHIRT TO MY SON BECAUSE HE HAD A LITTLE SNOW MAN ON HIS SHIRT, (COLORADO ROCKS!!!). BIG HOLES ARE A BIG DEAL, BUT ONES THAT YOU CAN PLUG WITH YOUR PINKY. GET A NEW FORM OF INTELLEGENCE.

I wish there was more to the story buddy, but that's what is soooo sickening, that, THAT IS the story. She told that sheriff that her husband was deployed and that there was no one to care for her children and he arrogantly offered to call social services for her to help her out.

has anyone priced clothes lately? I think if they want to have a dress code, it should go all the way to uniforms, it would save poor kids being picked on, it would save mom and dad money, it would make them all feel like they belonged instead of only those wearing Tommy and Nike. I live in the redneck capital of the world and you'd be surprised how many people from different social statuses want this.

Boy - aren't you the complainer. You and "this woman" are these children's parents. Do you by any chance have any idea what that means. Is everything someone or something else's fault. Are you not responsible. You are the parent. The school dress code was sent to you - in writing - and yet Y-O-U cannot be bothered to make sure your child complies. After all the school made the rule to protect your child so let them enfore it - right. You are N-O-T the only person in this world and it does not revolve around you and your opinion. The rules are made because partents will not take responsibility for children who have mostly holes and come looking like britney spears - therefore all holes must be banned. That is the potically correct liberal like you at work so you should be proud. Ban one = ban all. And yet you are to be exempt. Get over yourself. Take care of your child and someone else won't have to force you too. What you have written here would be grounds for your liberal child protective services to take your children from you as you have basically astated you do not care for them - Just for disagreeing with rules. Now that is something you can jump on. Don't mean to be rude - but I hope by this point that you get it. One tiny hole or 100 big holes. If the school bans and enforces one - the law requires the same for all.

Our local public school district has a uniform policy. I am not sure of it exactly, but I believe it's a white or navy blue (maybe not navy blue, but definitely white) long or short sleeved polo shirt, with no logos. I think a blue or white turtleneck can be worn UNDER the polo shirt (yeah, it looks really funny). I'm going to assume that a white or blue sweater could be worn as well.
On the bottom, it's either navy blue or khaki pants. Girls may wear navy blue (or I guess khaki) jumpers or skirts (with knee socks? I'm not sure). Socks must be either white or dark coloured. Shoes must be plain white sneakers/tennis shoes, or brown or black (I think black) dress shoes.
No oddly coloured hair, no piercings besides the ears, no visible tattoos... that sort of thing.
The weirdest part of the dress code is the policy of no bookbags. Students are allowed to bring in clear plastic (and only clear plastic) bags into school, but must keep them in their locker or an assigned area. Students must carry around all their books by hand until the end of the day.
When I went to the same school district five years ago, we still had the no coloured hair and no piercing stuff, as well as no clothes with alcohol, tobacco, or drug advertising, no short shorts, no backless shoes, no tanktops (for girls or guys), no backless shirts, no bellies showing, that sort of stuff.
The backpack rule was enforced when I went there, due to security problems. Carrying around your books by hand all day was a pain, and how I accidently broke a $100 graphing calculator (somebody accidently pushed me, and it went flying).
There was a lot of controversy when they came out with this policy last year, from civil rights and freedom of expression to how some people would afford the uniforms (it was only addressed in the June or July before school started). The district said that the uniforms would stop bullying.
I went to Catholic high school, and the faculty there was not nearly as strict about our uniform compared to my nephew's.

I graduated in 2003 from high school but my sister is a senior this year. They changed the dress code before she started this year. The first day, she got sent home because she wore a polo shirt with 5 buttons instead of 3! That's bullshit!

Its ignorant Conservative rednecks....they would rather send a kid home for wearing their hair too long or wearing a hat, than give them a proper education...i personally would leave Georgia as soon as possible...i drove through there once...we asked a lady, who worked in a gas station, how far we were from south Carolina, and she didn't even know what part of the state she was in, she had lived there her entire life and was only 25 miles from south Carolina....come to find out
only the inner city schools here in Houston have to wear uniforms, mostly because of gangs and the parents being to poor the afford fasionable clothes...

I certainly think this is an over reaction to to say the least....i don't blame the mom. I am from Texas and grandchildren are in uniforms.....the good part.....a student is not starting the day out with, "whose clothes are the coolest?" The kids need to learn that affluence will get them nowhere in life without hard hard work.....plus it makes sure that students from poor families are not pointed out as different.
I am hoping for your sake that this dramatic over reaction doesn't hurt any more kids.

yes dress code to me is over pushed. But the issue at hand to me is that kids are coming to school looking like they are going out to a night club not to school. The issue you talk are talking about I think the went over board. but had to handle it that way because of the words and tone that she used.

Sounds to me there is more to the story on her arrest than you're reporting...
Anyway, back to the question.
When is the last time you went to a school that didn't have a dress code? Have you SEEN what kids are being allowed to wear these days?
If I see one more damn boy's *** I'm going to scream. What possesses them to wear their pants so everyone can see their underwear is beyond me.
As for the girls, I've seen hookers working the streets wearing more clothes than some girls are allowed to wear.
HELLO!!! Where are the parents here?!?!?
Consider yourself lucky your school has a strict dress code. Kids are there to learn, not be fashion models.
