A native American comes from a long-line of American Indian Tribes, the orginal inhabitants & born in the USA, B4 the European settlers arrived.
Local means U live locally, U don't have 2 B born there 2 B a Local.
I remind myself Not 2 point out 2 Non-Native Americans that THEY R NOT NATIVE AMERICANS, unless their Grandfather/Mother, were Native Indians.
I'm doing well so far.
:)
Only b!tches me coz my Great Grandfather died thanx 2 a Gift of SmallPox infected blankets, given 2 them by Fork Tougue Whiteman!

It should mean if you are born and raised in this country then you a native of the USA. People try and make it something it not. If I was born in this country why would I want to say that I was from another country?

Booga Booga, by implication.
From the British Empires conquest and rule of India and what is now Pakistan. The old military coronals who ran the principalities were sometimes said to have 'gone native' if they spent their whole careers there and became somewhat 'Indian.' Even curry eating, billiard playing etc, which we actually took there initially came to be seen as signs that one had gone native when taken to excess.

I think the general population assumes that to be native to a place means to be born there.

Native Americans referred to the tribes that lived throughout North America prior to colonization by Europeans.
The preferred term now is First Nation, although these tribes were not actually the very first inhabitants of the region.
(Note we are talking about all of North America, not the United States).

"Native American" is a phrase coined in the liberal years of the 1960's to replace "Indian" with a supposedly more appropriate term. Regardless of the intent, the term is no more appropriate than its predecessor. "America" is derived from Amerigo Vespucci, a 16th century Italian navigator who was once said to be the "discoverer" of the continent.
