Or in your own personal life? Is there someone or some group that's always trying to make you or everyone feel guilty for something? Why do you think they the way that they are? How do you deal with the guilt they want to dump on you?

Mothers? The Catholic Church? Jewish Mothers? Religious Fanatics? Big Sisters? Alcoholic Parents? War Supporters? Your Boss at Work? Political fanantics? Or whoever.

Hopefully, this will not stir up any old wounds that anyone may have about any of their personal relationships, as that is not its intent, but it is instead perhaps a chance to find a consensus on the subject. I posted this question in this section because it can virtually be a spiritual burden on a person to have to deal with this and this section usually generates some of the most interesting responses.

I agree, som, guilt is necessary in order to keep us humane beings. Without it, we are like the animals who live strictly by the laws of the wild. Guilt, when it is one person lauding his personal standards over another, as if the recipient has no proper morality of his own, is the psycholical and spititual burden that I am refering to, and that kind of guilt is not always healthful, in my own opinion. I do agree with your beliefs on the perspective that you discussed and thank you for the comments.

The Catholic church left me with a guilt complex that has taken the better part of 20 years to get over.

Well, guilt is actually a good. Guilt is good because it lets you feel the difference between right and wrong. If you had no guilt then you would be dispassionate. In fact, if you were dispassionate, then you would find no difference between petting a puppy or strangling an old lady. So, guilt is good in that regard for our human nature. Also, guilt acts as a sign-post to let us know where we need to change for the better. After all we only feel guilty when we have done something contrary to our own good or the good of others. And so, once again, guilt is good.
It is with this understanding the Catholic Church teaches guilt. Guilt is mentioned for the sake of change for the better. Yet, one who is proud would see it as severe criticism and not heed the need to change. They would rather complain or run away.
Another thing to understand about guilt is that it is not just personal. There is communal guilt as well. Think about it. Are we not guilty as a nation for not changing our lives to better the enviorment and by consequence have all the troubles we have today (e.g.) air and land pollution because we refuse to drive fuel efficient vehicles, we do not properly dispose of our trash, and create more waste than previous centuries? It would be vain for anyone to say there hands are completely clean in this. And the sin mentioned wells up the guilt to do something about it and not to keep us in shame.
Yet the problem in our culture is we wish not to remember that sin exists and are afraid to experience guilt. If we live like this for long then we may lose the chance to see what is wrong and have the passion to do something about it. We would begin handling the problems of the world like we handle them today; poorly. We would in fact do things to make the problems larger and larger if we do not see what is wrong or have the guilt to move us to action. Like my favorite rock group Rush sings in the song "Second Nature",

"I'd like some changes, but you don't have the time.
We cannot go thinking its a victimless crime.
No one is blameless, but we are all without shame.
We fight the fire, while we're feeding the flame."

I hope this changes your view on guilt and understand why it needs to be mentioned from time to time in religious and secular circles. May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

My husband! (Honestly!)

Sometimes it feels as though I'm never allowed to say what's on my mind for fear it will hurt his feelings- which is very difficult for me as a frank person. I've learned to bite my tongue and keep quiet, for his sake, but it always leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

you got to at peace with yourself, find your own footing 1st. have a set of value & morals to guide you so that you can't be toss around by people opinions & persuasions. don't worry about people opinions of you. you stay true to yourself, if u done the right thing then stay firm. if u done something wrong, go make amends quickly. if they don't accept, leave it, u done your part.

be at peace, dude.
