As soon as your child starts asking questions. But you can start earlier by correctly naming the body parts (for example, Daddy has a penis NOT a wee wee or a pi-pi or whatever!).
Gear the answers around the age of the child.
I have to think of the joke about a little girl, 5 or 6, who asks her Mom, "Where did I come from?"
The Mom gulps and goes into this long explanation about fallopian tubes and sperm and Mommy and Daddy loving each other and so on.
Finally, after about 15 minutes and touching all the bases, the Mom stops. And the girl pipes up, "No, Mommy! Jody up the street came from Miami. WHERE did I come from?"

And I always told my daughter to check back with me if she heard something from one of the kids at school (you'd be amazed at the stories these kids come up with! One example, a woman couldn't get pregnant if SHE didn't have an orgasm! Hello!!!).
The main thing is to be honest and open.
The kids will eventually get sex education in school. (My daughter had it in 7th grade biology which I think is late considering the age many girls being menstruation these days!). Besides I want to teach my child about sex, not have her hear it from some near stranger, however well-informed s/he may be!

As soon as a child shows an interest or asks a question about it. You don't give the whole story, just enough to satisfy their curiosity at the time. Let it be an open thing that is easily discussed with your child and there won't be the big taboo when they get older.

10. I know so many kids especially me who start experimenting with sex at 12. I lost my virginity at 12. Everyone thinks that just because your a certain age you should still be playing with dolls, but open your eyes america. With all the media and references to sex we aren't blind, and when we ask questions and adults are so quick to say oh thats not important your to young etc we get even more curious. Therefore i say 10.

In my opinion I think that sex ed should start at the age 8 because the age of pre teens having sex is greater. And the number is growing every year.

Why sexual education at all? After all present day media is sufficient for that. Moreover even without it there is a population explotion and if you fire it enough, homo sapiens will be more in numbers then the reptiles on earth, at least in india.

this is kind of a trick question......for public education....I would say 4th grade.....that doen't mean getting down and dirty with details....it means education.....how about first education about.....healt hazards of sexual contact......teach kids the poiints of mortality

however.....my kids are 20,17,16 and 13......We have had discussions regarding sex....since they first brought it up....it is natural and no big deal....the more they know the less it is TABOO
