I started coloring my hair when I was 16 too (I am 26 now)! I'm a brunette naturally, so I just played around with that and tried to enhance my color. Hair coloring IS damaging to your hair. It's even worse if you bleach it and make it lighter.

Coloring your hair is fun, but it does come with some risk.

The most obvious risk is not choosing the right color - a good rule of thumb is don't go darker or lighter more than two shades from your own natural color. If you go too light, you're hair will look orange. If you go too dark, your skin tone will look haggard.

A fun option might be to go to the salon and have a professional give you some highlights or lowlights, depending on the natural color of your hair. (They can explain the difference and recommend which would be the best option for you.) I would NOT use the home kits for highlighting...you really should know how to do that, and it isn't as easy as these companies would have you believe. They just want to sell you a product. It isn't flattering to look lopsided with half your head more highlighted than the other half...or to go too heavy instead of having the subtle, flattering affect that would be best.

Non-ammonia products are healthier, and if you use a home product, then I would suggest a temporary or semi-permanent color, instead of a permanent one. Permanent colors are best for people who are covering gray. Obviously you're a long way from that at 16.

One less obvious drawback to coloring your hair is once you start, it's hard to stop because roots growing out look so horrible. That's another plus for going with professional highlights/lowlights....that's alot easier to grow out.

Coloring you hair can become a nuisance to maintain....but lots of people try it, and don't have any problem going through the growing out period. I was never one of those....

Finally, long-term use HAS been potentially linked to a type of cancer called multiple myeloma. I'm sure chemicals are absorbed through the scalp, and that's never healthy. But I think this would be an unlikely thing to occur...otherwise the average lifespan of a hairdresser (who breathes and handles that stuff every day) would be about 40 years of age.

Good luck and have fun if you decide to try it. Remember that subtle or gradual changes are best!

My sister is 21 years old. She used to have beautiful brown hair. One day she decided that she wanted to be a blond. She started out slow, w/ highlights at first and eventually started bleaching her hair. Everytime a her hair grew a little bit she rebleached it so that her roots didn't show. After only about six months her hair had thinned so bad that she had a few bald spots. So my suggestion to you is, if your going to color your hair 1) see a professional, 2) be responsible about it, and 3) since your only 16 make sure your parents don't care. However, I'm 23 years old and have never dyed my hair and probally never will. I have a light brown hair color that has a red tint to it in the sun. Sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't, but its what I was born w/ and the way I choose to leave it. If you decide to dye your hair do it b/c you want to not b/c all your friends have all un-natural hair colors or highlights. Good luck.

I tried to use some semipermanent dye a few times. The last time I left it on longer to try to make the color show up better. Bad idea because it fried my hair and I still dont think it's recovered, and that was in 1999. Frazzled broken off pieces for some reason wouldnt grow out right. If you do it dont ever leave it on longer than the instructions say

Hi, I am younger than you but i have lots of experience with Hair dye. I have dyed my hair several times. Try to avoid dying your whole head it's too much of a dramatic change. I reccomend you do not colour your hair. Chemicals/dye do damage your hair it makes your hair brittle and dry. It is alright to have semi-dye which you can try out so say if you dyed your whole head with semi-dye it would wash out after a few weeks but you would get used to the colour and see what the right colour would be for you and it does not damage your hair as much. If you do dye your hair I reccomend Paul Mitchelle Moisturiser shampoo and conditioner they are the most expensive but the best for brittle/damaged/dehydrated hair. Good Luck.

I have also colored my hair for some time now. I get a highlight weave done. My hair is a real dark brown. I get it lightened a bit to not blonde but maybe a Carmel color. Looks real good most people that done know I color it don’t know its not my natural color. It does damage the hair so use good shampoo and conditioner like a one that will add moisture to your hair.

Doing colors on the hair looks great. Just have fun.
Chemicals do harm your hair and health as well. But don't do it more frequent than 2 months' interval will be fine.

They harm your hair but you can help repair some of the damage with a good conditioner. follow the directions and do the sample test first with a small clipping of your hair to determine how long to leave the coloring agent on...

I started coloring my hair when I was 12.......

I'm now 19... the chemicals definitly WILL harm your hair. The best thing is to use semi-permanent hair colors or wash out colors.
