it went out the door with school discipline and religion.

I see two good reasons why this may be the case... lack of time and lack of desire.
for the lack of desire, I heard this on a comedy show... and it made total sense. The problem is that a lot of the parents today are punks... they themselve are disrespectful and rude, and kids, being the sponges that they are, absorb a lot of their parent's actions unintentionally, then they themselves act like the parents. Remember when it was shocking that a baby's first word would be "Sh*t" or "Hell" or "Damn"? Now I don't thin anyone adult or child can have a single conversation without saying "F*ck". I believe a lot of this stems from what we watch and listen to is a lot more "on the edge" and that this behavior is glorified... look at MTV... MTV has totally exemplified that acting ghetto is hip and trendy, and that it's cool to talk like a Hood Rat... "Fo-Shizzle..." WTF...
Combine that with the fact that most parents today don't want to take time out to spend with their kids... they have other obligations or have their own agenda to attend to... and it's usually not raising their children. I'm not saying that makes them bad parents... some of that can be blamed on the fact that in some cases, single parents may have to hold two jobs to make ends meet, but then there's the parents that have such a busy social schedule and are so full of self-persuits that they leave no time to spend with their kids... that their kids should automatically know what to do and when to do it... like the ones that expect the school to do all of the child rearing, but won't take the time to get involved in their child's educational career.
another thing that could add to this is that I remember that if you did something bad and your parents weren't around, another adult had no problem to step up to the plate and deal out some punishment... nowadays, if I were walking down the street, if kids were doing something bad I wouldn't even try to stop them for fear that the parents would want to sue me for doing damage to their kids... you have a better chance of being made into the bad guy by doing the right thing than to practice empathy and just ignore it like it didn't happen.
call me a fossil, but i never remember mom taking me grocery shopping at 12am... but last night I went to Wal-Mart to get a combo lock, and there were full families there grocery shopping with their young kids...
times have definitely changed... and not necessarily for the best

I remember the same thing too.
Today, everything is so politically correct, nobody dares discipline a child or scold them in public otherwise CPS will be called, or you will be labeled an abusive parent, or if a teacher hears about a spanking, they will accuse you of being abusive. Plus, with TV and the Internet, kids are aware of many laws and human rights issues and use the words "sue" and "abusive" just for suggesting wrong-doings.
I know teachers leaving teaching because they are severely limited in what they can say, do, comment on, celebrate, and more. Sick world.

Lack of discipline because it is child abuse or something like that. Ettiquete starts at home though. So why are the parents not teaching the kids how to be respectful?

No doubt about it, with parental discipline becoming "politically incorrect" and spankings being considered child abuse, kids these days think they can do whatever they want. We parents are led to believe that anything we do to correct our children's behavior will cripple their self-esteem. My wife and I impose punishments on our kids for misbehavior, but always make sure the kids understand what was wrong with what they did. Lack of discipline as kids leads to lost and ineffective adults.

Yes, of course. Once Fed stepped in and said, "You cannot discipline your children any longer!" things really went downhill. So, kids who know nothing started having kids. Etc, etc, and so on. So now these children have kids of their own, and have been babied their whole life and show no respect, have no work ethic and continue to collect more welfare from the more children they produce.

The problem with today's youth is that they really don't get their butts whopped because the school system teaches them that if your parents spank you that is abuse. I believe that it is definitely a parental problem also because parents lack the time to deal with their children. Children are what you make them so if we feel that they are not as good as they should be then it is our own faults

Absolutely! Parents let their children, literally, get away with murder, and our society encourages such behavior:
"Oh, no! Don't spank your kid for kicking the neighbor's dog, because that's child abuse! And the neighbor better not even think about raising his voice to my kid, let alone a hand, because I'll sue him for everything, including the property he owns that my kid trespassed on so that my kid could kick his dog!'
It's getting pretty ridiculous! I think parents should pay attention to their children, know where they are and what they're doing, and discipline them as appropriate.

Political-correctness has washed away the ability of parent to discipline kids the way we were when we were younger...
That, and I'm sure the dead-beat parent ratio is much higher now.
I'm sure it's nothing a good beating wouldn't fix!!!

lack of discipline, the media (news, music, movies), single parents, law changes dealing with censorship,
now a days you dare not whip your child, in private or in public. apparantly that is considered child abuse. i agree some parents take it too far, but for the majority, i think parents know where the line is drawn on that. but don't let someone catch you whipping your kid.
