I would be crazy to buy a CD or DVD in the mall because of the mark up in those stores when i can go to Best Buy or Circuit City and get the same thing for 2/3 the price.....Are the mall jewelry stores similar in that respect (if a ring of comparable color, cut, clarity, and carat were at both the mall and independant store would they,on the average, have different costs?)

Best thing to do is shop around. There isn't anything wrong with getting it in the mall.

Price the ring you're looking at for your fiancee in the different stores in the mall and price elsewhere. Each place is going to have their own overhead (ie. rent, bills, wages, etc) but depending on where they are, it could be more. A jewelry store downtown could have higher rent than a jewelry store in the mall. Frankly, in the big mall where I live, there is 3 jewelry stores plus jewelry counters in two department stores. If I was looking for a piece of jewelry, I would price it at all five of those places and see what their prices are. The other thing to keep in mind is that the one's in the malls tend to be part of a chain which will get deals on their diamonds as opposed to an independant jeweller who might have to pay more.

Sure. Some "mall chains" actually offer great deals / warranty. My husband bought my ring at Zales (in a mall) and I have a lifetime warranty on the diamond, my diamond is certified, and anytime I am near a Zales store, they clean my ring for free!!

Costco and Sam's have diamonds. I found that independent stores have better diamond selections. Actually, we never went to a mall for diamond shopping. They usually have silly crap like necklaces and earrings. Remember to focus on the stone only. The ring is secondary

Malls are great! They give you the option to go from store to store to find the perfect ring before you forget what you just saw. Don't forget to check department store jewelry counters, too, not just jewelers.

In the mall, you'll actually pay less. The bigger chains, such as Kay's and Rogers and Holland are in malls. They are less expensive than the smaller, independent jewelers because the chains can mass produce rings, while the independent jewelers specialize in custom orders.

All Jewlery stores in malls are a rip off. Buy online or from a bubble gum machine to really save big $$.

There are many reputable jewelry stores in our malls. Just do your homework. Check out lots of different stores before you settle on one. Check out their follow up maintenance offers too.

The best place to buy a diamond is from a reputable jeweler. Select one that has an established business. Ask friends and family where they would shop for suggestions. Tiffany's is always good.......*smiles* CONGRATS and Good Luck!
