Yes. I am 51 years old, and started walking 2 months ago. I have since lost 15 pounds. The trick is to start slowly, or you will get sore and disappointed. I started walking 1 time around the block for a week and then added another block every week. I walk 6 times a week. You must realize that it took years to gain all that weight and it might take that long to lose, so don't quit. I now walk 9 times around the block. I have read that you lose 300 calories if you walk for an hour. But remember, 1 soda has 160 calories. So you must also watch your diet. Good Luck!

The more scientific you are about it the better your results will be, count your calloric intake during the day, a good maintenance level is around 1200 calories per day, to lose weight you need to go below that level. Walking burns callories, so yes you can lose weight, but if you walk for ten minutes and burn 30 callories, but eat 1400 callories during the day, your going to gain weight.

yeah, and walk hills, and try backwards. Mixing it up will help.
Add handweights or water bottles.
