I really don't know what to do with myself... I like drawing (I'm good at it, but I didn't study art), my parents want me to be an engineer... sigh. And I haven't a good alternative project to propose. Anyone could help?!

How much time do you have? Have you already started college?

I'm thinking of something that would be a compromise -- that is, something which would make your parents feel their wishes were being respected, yet which would give you the self-expression you seek.

So in that spirit... there are LOTS of engineering fields where you could get to spend a lot of your time drawing and designing things.

Industrial design -- drawing, styling and designing everyday objects, from toasters and telephones to automobiles and furniture. Somebody has to draw every part of those objects, with an understanding of how the object will be used, how it will be made, and more. And I would think it would be a lot of fun to see people using the stuff you designed. (Unless they complain about how much it sucks, of course. :-)

Software design -- understanding layout, flow, and visual cues is CRITICAL to designing new software, and if you combine that with an understanding of usability and software design, you could have a very successful career and an enjoyable life.

Architecture -- combines an understanding of engineering with the yearning to draw beautiful things, whether they're homes or skyscrapers or bridges. (Google Images > Frank Lloyd Wright to see what I mean.)

For right now, though, here's my recommendation: Get yourself a copy of Macromedia Flash and a DeviantArt page and start putting up animations. But not just regular animations -- think about making them interactive. That is, learn to use the links and buttons in Flash to hook up your drawings to other drawings, to different motions, to different choices. Start thinking in this way and there's actually one other potentially VERY fun career ahead of you that combines drawing and engineering:

Game design.

Meanwhile, go ahead and take some drawing and composition classes. You'll have to spend a fair amount of time at first drawing shapes, tubes of paint, hands, chairs and the like, but you'll learn a lot about layout, perspective, lighting, shading and more. And you can always tell your parents that you're studying drawing as a step toward becoming a design engineer. It will be the truth, but it will also make them happy while letting you explore something you like.

There are many different types of engineering and some, such as package engineering, just might satisfy both "requirements". Otherwise you can look into things such as architecture or design.

You didn't mention why your parents are pushing for engineering so I don't know if you have particular talents that lead them to push you in that direction or if it's more of a guaranteed job/good income concern.

There are many different aptitude tests available to help you identify what type of jobs would be good for your particular talents and likes. You should contact a guidance or career counselor at your school to talk about your choices. Bottom line, you should go in a direction that will make you happy. While money makes like easier, it doesn't buy happiness so you need to do whatever makes you happy. Ultimately that's what your parents want too.

Are you in college? Im not sure your age but you are under 30 you still have time. Right now you just need to try out different things. Figure out what you like, hobbies and habits that are to your interests. Dont follow what your parents say cause in the end you will just hate your job and end up bankrupt. Do if what you like. I went to school and majored in business because almost everything in life starts off in business, no matter what you choose. Everything else just falls into place.

Don't do something just cuz your parents want you to. Do something that makes you happy. You can always go back to college/university and take some art courses if your interested. Good luck, seems as if me and you are on the same boat.

learn PERL (programming language).. and help defend those who need it.
suicide bombers are considered 'fundamentalists' in a religion that sometimes disowns them.

those who support intelligent design are considered 'religious extremists' when they might not even be agnostic.

and lately the government has been calling the islamics 'fundamentalists'

sounds like you might be the creative type. what about marketing and advertising. don't pursue anything you don't really like. you'll be miserable for the rest of your life or may end of changing career paths down the road anyway!

Why not be a graphic artist, it combines what your parents want with what you want. Better yet, why not just do what you want since it is your life and you deserve to be happy in it.

Look into Massage therapy, it pays well, gives you free time to paint, or just enjoy life, and school doesn't cost 50,000.
