This morning an acquaintance of mine mentioned that she thought it was unhealthy to have a plant in the bedroom. I have never heard this before. Where does this saying come from? What's the reasoning behind it?

I think it's more like many plants in the bedroom. It's because plants use oxygen to breathe, as do we of course. Too many plants supposedly use up too much oxygen and we won't have enough while we sleep. But as I said, it's having way too many plants not one or two.

Plants emit oxygen and thrive on carbon dioxide - opposite of us.
Sounds good right? Wrong. At night it is a whole new ballgame.
It is true that flowers and plants are not considered good feng shui in bedroom, and the reasoning also has a scientific basis. The plants and flowers emit carbon dioxide at night.
But it is ancient chinese Feng Shui where this thought gets its origins. Look it up there are interesting tips for your life and bedroom.

Might go back to the days that hospitals didn't allow flowers because they suposedly used the O2. In fact, photosynthsis uses CO2 & onverts it to O2, providing you w/ more O2 than you'd have w/out it. Now, interestingly enough.... O2 isn't really good for you (even tho we need it to survive!) O2 causes oxididation of you cells. That's why anti-oxidents are so good for you.
So, I guess if you are going to have plnats in your bedroom, you should make sure to get anti-oxidents throuout the day, which you should be doing anyway!

And yes, they do reverse this at night, but I always sleep w/ a window open anyway & that provides lots of O2 for us all!

I cannot fathom why a plant in the bedroom is unhealthy. Your friend doesn't know what she's talking about, I don't think.

Plants give out carbon dioxide when there is no photosynthesis taking place. In other words, at night.
