Sure they were individually selected and persecuted, but I believe modern Atheists as a whole continue to be persecuted daily. We are forced to endure religion printed on money, massive amounts of religion in government, religious fights in the school system, churches getting tax breaks but using public services, religious wars, religious freaks knocking on our doors, and many, many more examples. We live in a hideous religious society that brands you as an evil outsider for not following their beliefs. I absolutely feel persecuted and would like to go just one day without seeing religious icons, or hearing religious rantings, or seeing god stamped into many things, etc. I find it all offensive, yet I'm powerless to get away from it and am forced to be careful I am in voicing my views.

Galileo was a particularly famous example.Persecuted by the Church and forced to recant, he turned out to be right after all.
