I would like my sister to be my baby's godparent, but my boyfriend said that it's a stupid idea. He said that because he said that she's already the baby's aunt...Does it matter?

i don't think it's stupid at all. your child's Godparent should be someone who will assist in raising your child in their faith. this means also calling the parents into "check" from time to time. the person should be strong in their faith. if this is your sister - then so be it! i'm a Godmother to nephews, nieces & friends children. one catch with friends.... my one sister in law choose a friend and they had a falling out (she's quite demented now) and you can not "undo" a godparent. just pray on it and choose wisely!

He's wrong. It's not uncommon at all for aunts and uncles to also be godparents. The role of a godparent is to be a spiritual and religious guide for that child. You essentially trust these people to assist you in the religious/faith aspect of raising your children. With that in mind, doesn't it make sense to pick a brother or sister? You are closest to them and know their character and beliefs best.

A common misconception is that godparents take your children if you should die. Not true. Godparents have no legal responsibility for their godchildren unless stated so in a will. Guardianship, if not determined by a will, is decided upon by family court.

No it doesn't matter. If you think your aunt is an ideal person to be a godparent, then that is all that matters. The fact that she is related to you, and would have already have an involvement in your baby's life is a plus, and this will make the relationship even stronger.

I don't know the rules but I agree with your boyfriend. Your sister will already have a special relationship with your child, she's the aunt that already comes with a certain level of responsibility, love etc. Godparents are usually persons outside of the family who you would like to have that same sort of relationship, love the child etc such as a very close personal friend.

Good luck.

A godparent is someone who will assist the parents in bringing the child up in the faith. The godparent should actively participate in the faith and be willing to be a good witness to the child on how to live out his or her faith.

If these criteria apply to your sister, then go ahead.

It doesn't matter. I'm the godparent of my nephew, so I'm in that same situation where I'm the aunt but also the godparent. Doesn't confuse either of us.

If the aunt is suitable for the job, sure. All of my nieces and nephews have family as godparents...who better to ensure faith development?

I don't see a problem with that. I'd probably make my sister godparent over my children.
