You may want to make some smalll changes in your routines and life style to begin to lose weight slowly and gently. Crash diets don't work anyway. Here is a routine that has worked for my husband and me.

1. Eat three nutritious meals and three snacks everyday. Cut out junk food. You probably need about 1500 to 1800 calories a day.

2. Drink lots of water - at least 8 big glasses a day. Stop drinking soda.

3. Begin a simple weight lifting program at home or go to a gym if that is possible for you. Ordinary household items (tins of soup, for example) can serve as weights for beginners. Invest in a sensible weight training book. Any large book store will have several. Use light weights and stop is you experience more pain. It might be a good idea to get some initial advice from a trainer or physiotherapist.

4. Buy yourself a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day.

5. Record everything you eat and all your exercise to make sure you have a "calorie deficit". Two of the sites I've included will help you do that.

6. Park at the back of the parking lot instead of close to the door. Always use stairs - never the elevator or escalator.

7. A mini stepper is an easy piece of equipment to have at home and gives great results. I bought mine at a second hand store for $4. Try one at a gym to see if it is possible for you to use one withour pain.

I hope these thoughts help. Good luck with it. Take care.

I can suggest a plan to help the pain, but not diet. Go to a massage therapist preferably private so you can set up a plan and so that you always have the same person working on your problem areas, ie sciatica. They will usualy work with budgets, or your insurance might pick up some of it. Good luck.

I recommend you keep doing the exercises, particularly the swimming and walking; you should also try cycling or an exercise bike.
For the diet I suggest you eat only low fat foods. Remove all butter and other animal fats from your diet - that means no pastries or cookies too. If you can afford it, eat only lean white meats and fish no burgers or processed meat. Also, reduce the size of the portions you eat to half that you eating before. Do not drink alcohol or non-diet soft drinks.

The root cause for your weight gain (and depression) would be the back pain caused by disc collapse. For as long as you don't get the correct treatment, that long you will have a miserable life. I had two collapsed disks - major pain! I went to see one of the best neurosurgeons in the world. Had the surgery, didn't lose my mobility, pain is gone... I do not know from where in the world you're writing from, but if you want more info, you are welcome to contact me.

i am physically fit and yet eat any kind of diet. i guess 1 thing i could suggest is that; overweight is fairly influenced with the kind of food you eat, i strongly believe on that but! controlling on the amount of food you take is definitely the greatest factor of gaining weight. bottom line, learn not on kind of diet you must take BUT with the kind of discipline you can give yourself when it comes to food. You would surely surpass that.. just practice self discipline
